This instruction emphasizes the importance of proper respect and conduct towards the Prophet ﷺ. It is generally understood that the first term (*rāʿinā*) was being used by some people intending a negative meaning, so all believers were told to avoid all doubt by using a different word to ask for the Prophet’s attention.

Explanations vary as to what exactly was the negative aspect of *rāʿinā* (راعنا). Though this basically means “give us your attention”, some scholars explain that the reciprocal verb form could also imply “If you listen to us, we will listen to you”, which is disrespectful. Another explanation is that some of the Madinan Jews and hypocrites used it as an insult, changing it slightly to imply “fool”,  “sheep herder”, or similar.

Instead, all were commanded to use the expression *“unẓurnā* (انظرنا)” which also means “look upon us” or “give us attention” but cannot be twisted or understood in a way that would be disrespectful to the Prophet ﷺ. This command helped set the sincere believers apart from the others.



Why are believers given instructions on exactly which words to use?

The believers are prohibited from using words that could be misunderstood or misused in a manner that is disrespectful to the Prophet ﷺ.
