Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. It refers to their progeny. [Mujāhid, al-Farrāʾ]
2. It refers to the people of Makkah as mentioned in the phrase "and give provision to its people".

The messenger that they prayed for is Muḥammad (ﷺ).

To whom does the pronoun refer to in "Send among them a messenger"?

Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. He takes *zakāh* from them and purifies them thereby.[Ibn ʿAbbās, al-Farrāʾ]
2. He purifies them from polytheism and disbelief. [Muqātil]
3. He calls them to that by which they will become pure.
