Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. The Anṣār, when they harvested their palm trees, would each bring some of their produce and hang it in the masjid for the poor among the Muhājirūn to eat from. Some people who were not inclined toward doing good would bring a bunch containing inferior dates and bad-quality produce and hang it up. This verse was then revealed. [al-Barāʾ ibn ʿĀzib]
2. The Prophet (ﷺ) commanded the giving of Zakāt al-Fiṭr, and a man brought poor-quality dates. This verse was then revealed. [Jābir ibn ʿAbd Allāh]
