Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. It was revealed concerning Banū ʿAmr ibn ʿUmayr ibn ʿAwf from Thaqīf and Banū al-Mughīrah from Banū Makhzūm. The Banū al-Mughīrah were taking interest from Thaqīf. When Allah forbade interest, Thaqīf demanded what was owed to them by Banū al-Mughīrah. This verse and the one after it were revealed. [Ibn ʿAbbās]
2. It was revealed concerning ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān and al-ʿAbbās, who had given loans on dates. When the time of harvest came, the owner of the dates said: "If you take your due, nothing will remain for me and my family. How about you take half and I will double it for you?" They agreed. When the term ended, they demanded the increase. When the Prophet (ﷺ) learned of this, he forbade them, and then this verse was revealed. [ʿAṭāʾ, ʿIkrimah]
3. It was revealed concerning al-ʿAbbās and Khālid ibn al-Walīd, who were partners in the pre-Islamic period and used to lend money on interest. When Islam came, they had substantial amounts in interest. This verse was revealed, and the Prophet (ﷺ) said: "Behold, all interest from the pre-Islamic period is abolished, and the first interest I abolish is that of al-ʿAbbās." [Al-Suddī]
