Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. The Garden of *ʿAdn* (on earth).
2. The Eternal Garden (which we will enter in the Hereafter). (Ed: this is by far the most common understanding among the scholars.)

1.The wheat plant. [Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿAbdullāh ibn Salām, Kaʿb al-Aḥbār, Wahb ibn Munabbih, Qatādah, ʿAṭiyyah al-ʿAwfī, Muḥārib ibn Dithār, Muqātil]
2. The grapevine. [Ibn Masʿūd, Ibn ʿAbbās, Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, Jaʿdah ibn Hubayrah]
3. The fig tree. [Al-Ḥasan, ʿAṭāʾ ibn Abī Rabāḥ]
4. A tree called "the Tree of Knowledge". [Abū Ṣāliḥ from Ibn ʿAbbās]
5. The camphor tree. [ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib]
6. The date palm tree. [Abū Mālik]

An additional seventh view was reported from Wahb ibn Munabbih, who said it is "the Tree of Eternity", but the dispute is over what sort of tree it was (not what it was called).
