Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. He was struck with the bone that is next to the cartilage. [ʿIkrimah from Ibn ʿAbbās] Abū Sulaymān al-Dimashqī said: That bone is the base of the ear. 
2. He was struck with the thigh. This was also narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās, ʿIkrimah, Mujāhid, and Qatādah. ʿIkrimah and Mujāhid mentioned that it was the right thigh.
3. He was struck with the piece of flesh between the shoulders. [al-Suddī from his teachers]
4. He was struck with the tail. [Layth from Mujāhid]
5. He was struck with the tailbone, which is the bone upon which the body is built. [Saʿīd ibn Jubayr]
6. He was struck with the tongue. [al-Ḍaḥḥāk]
