Tafsir: An-Nisa 4:101

واذا ضربتم في الارض فليس عليكم جناح ان تقصروا من الصلاة ان خفتم ان يفتنكم الذين كفروا ان الكافرين كانوا لكم عدوا مبينا ١٠١

وَإِذَا ضَرَبْتُمْ فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ فَلَيْسَ عَلَيْكُمْ جُنَاحٌ أَن تَقْصُرُوا۟ مِنَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ إِنْ خِفْتُمْ أَن يَفْتِنَكُمُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓا۟ ۚ إِنَّ ٱلْكَـٰفِرِينَ كَانُوا۟ لَكُمْ عَدُوًّۭا مُّبِينًۭا ١٠١

وَإِذَا

ضَرَبۡتُمۡ

فِي

ٱلۡأَرۡضِ

فَلَيۡسَ

عَلَيۡكُمۡ

جُنَاحٌ

أَن

تَقۡصُرُواْ

مِنَ

ٱلصَّلَوٰةِ

إِنۡ

خِفۡتُمۡ

أَن

يَفۡتِنَكُمُ

ٱلَّذِينَ

كَفَرُوٓاْۚ

إِنَّ

ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ

كَانُواْ

لَكُمۡ

عَدُوّٗا

مُّبِينٗا

١٠١

When you travel through the land, it is permissible for you to shorten the prayer¹—˹especially˺ if you fear an attack by the disbelievers. Indeed, the disbelievers are your sworn enemies.

1. Sajdah or Sujud, a way of prostration specified by the Shari` ah of Islam as a part of Salah.

Commentary

The subject of Jihad and Hijrah were taken up in previous verses. Since travel is involved in Jihad and Hijrah under most conditions, the likelihood of confrontation with the enemy is strong and frequent while making such a trip. Therefore, special mention has been made in the verses cited above of some particular leaves and concessions in the performance of Sarah in due consideration of travel and its dangers.
