Tafsir: An-Nisa 4:73

ولين اصابكم فضل من الله ليقولن كان لم تكن بينكم وبينه مودة يا ليتني كنت معهم فافوز فوزا عظيما ٧٣

وَلَئِنْ أَصَـٰبَكُمْ فَضْلٌۭ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ لَيَقُولَنَّ كَأَن لَّمْ تَكُنۢ بَيْنَكُمْ وَبَيْنَهُۥ مَوَدَّةٌۭ يَـٰلَيْتَنِى كُنتُ مَعَهُمْ فَأَفُوزَ فَوْزًا عَظِيمًۭا ٧٣

وَلَئِنۡ

أَصَٰبَكُمۡ

فَضۡلٞ

مِّنَ

ٱللَّهِ

لَيَقُولَنَّ

كَأَن

لَّمۡ

تَكُنۢ

بَيۡنَكُمۡ

وَبَيۡنَهُۥ

مَوَدَّةٞ

يَٰلَيۡتَنِي

كُنتُ

مَعَهُمۡ

فَأَفُوزَ

فَوۡزًا

عَظِيمٗا

٧٣

But if you return with Allah’s bounties, they will say—as if there had been no bond between you—“We wish we had been there with them to share the great gain!”

You are reading a tafsir for the group of verses 4:72 to 4:74

2. Seen outwardly, the words of the verse 72 (... وَإِنَّ مِنكُمْ ) seem to suggest that this too is addressed to the believers, although the characteristics described later on cannot be taken to be those of the believers. Therefore, al-Qurtubi says that they signify hypocrites. Since, they were the ones who used to claim being Muslims, at least outwardly. This is why they have been identified as a group from among the believers.
