Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. It means not rebelling against the authorities nor transgressing by committing highway robbery. [Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, Mujāhid]
2. It means not exceeding in eating beyond his need nor transgressing by consuming it when he can find something else. [Al-Ḥasan, ʿIkrimah, Qatādah, al-Rabīʿ]
3. Not rebelling means not deeming it lawful, and not transgressing means not being in a state of necessity. [Reported from Saʿīd ibn Jubayr, Muqātil]
4. It means not pursuing it out of desire for it, nor transgressing by eating to his fill (i.e. he should only eat enough to preserve his life). [Al-Suddī]
