Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. It was revealed concerning ʿAbdullāh ibn Rawāḥah, who had a dispute with his son-in-law and swore not to enter his house or speak to him. He would say, "I have sworn by Allah, so it is not lawful for me unless my oath is fulfilled." [Ibn ʿAbbās]
2. It was revealed about a man who would swear by Allah not to maintain ties of kinship or reconcile between people. [al-Rabīʿ ibn Anas]
3. It was revealed regarding Abū Bakr when he swore not to spend on Miṣṭaḥ. [Ibn Jurayj]
4. It was revealed concerning Abū Bakr when he swore not to approach his son ʿAbd al-Raḥmān until he accepted Islam. [Muqātil ibn Ḥayyān and Muqātil ibn Sulaymān]

1. The meaning is: "Do not swear by Allah to withhold righteous acts, piety, or reconciliation between people." [Ibn ʿAbbās, Mujāhid, ʿAṭāʾ, Ibn Jubayr, Ibrāhīm, al-Ḍaḥḥāk, Qatādah, al-Suddī, Muqātil, al-Farrāʾ, Ibn Qutaybah, al-Zajjāj]
2. The meaning is: "Do not swear falsely by Allah in order to guard against people, or as a favour to them, or to reconcile between them." [ʿAṭiyyah from Ibn ʿAbbās]
3. The meaning is: "Do not frequently swear by Allah, even if you are truthful and righteous, as excessive swearing by Allah is a form of boldness towards Him." [Ibn Zayd]
