As the blessed month of Ramadan approaches, it is essential for us to start preparing our hearts for a meaningful and transformative experience. Ramadan offers a blessed and unique opportunity for us to strengthen our relationship with the Quran and deepen our bond with Allah. By focusing on the themes of purification, iman (faith), and self-development, we can start to build the momentum that will enhance our spiritual growth and maximise the benefits of this sacred month.“How can purifying my heart before Ramadan benefit me?”When we make an effort to prepare our hearts for Ramadan, we put ourselves in a better position to take advantage of the blessings of Ramadan starting on day one. Purifying our hearts will no doubt make us more receptive to Allah's speech, which, in turn, will mean that any engagement with the Quran will be more meaningful.<h3 dir="ltr">“The Quran is light, and our hearts are like a window. And just as an unclean window obstructs light from entering the home, our hearts act in the same way in receiving the light of the Quran.” Shaykh Hammad Fahim</h3>In order to enrich our hearts, we can strive to&nbsp;purify, protect&nbsp;and preserve&nbsp;our hearts this Ramadan. I will address these in the following three posts.

Introduction

<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/91/9">91:9</a></blockquote>One crucial way we can prepare our hearts for Ramadan is by purifying ourselves from negative influences and distractions. This process involves purifying our physical, emotional, and spiritual selves. Reflecting on the Quran, we find numerous verses that emphasise the significance of purification.<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/2/222">2:222</a></blockquote>This verse reminds us of the importance of seeking sincere repentance and striving to cleanse our hearts and souls from sins and unhealthy attachments.I remember attending a study circle where the Imam drew the analogy of repentance with the example of washing dishes. “If you wash them straight away after eating, it’s much easier than leaving them for a day or two,” he advised. He went on to say, “The longer you leave them, the worse it gets”. I found this worth reflecting on, and now every time I wash the dishes, it makes me think about the state of my own heart. Is there a sin or impurity I’ve left unwashed, ignored because it felt easier to delay? Allah has kept us alive, and that itself is an invitation. Now is the time to return, to repent sincerely, and to purify what we can before it hardens.The Quran describes the heart as being prone to becoming encrusted due to persistent sinning and disobedience. And if the heart reaches such a state, it is veiled from receiving guidance. The Quran mentions,<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/83/14">83:14</a></blockquote>The Great Exegete and Scholar, Imam Ibn Kathir (d. 774 H)&nbsp;says:<h2 dir="rtl">&nbsp;وَإِنَّمَا حَجَبَ قُلُوبَهُمْ عَنِ الْإِيمَانِ بِهِ مَا عَلَيْهَا مِنَ الرَّيْن الَّذِي قَدْ لَبِسَ قُلُوبَهُمْ مِنْ كَثْرَةِ الذُّنُوبِ وَالْخَطَايَا</h2>"Indeed, it is their sins and wrongdoing that have covered their hearts and veiled them from believing in the truth." (Tafsir Ibn Kathir, verse <a href="https://quran.com/83:14" target="_blank">83:14</a>) “What should I do if I have committed sins?” Whenever we commit a sin, we are left with two options. The first is to continue indulging in the sin unabated. This, of course, will lead to a sick and blackened heart. The second option is to turn back to Allah with a conscience-stricken heart, fleeing to Him with remorse and regret. These emotions compel us to acknowledge our vulnerabilities and inspire us to seek repentance and reaffirm our commitment to Allah, and help us to refrain from repeating the same deeds or neglect. This pivotal stage is essential for our purification journey.In this regard the Prophet (peace be upon him) advised in a hadeeth reported in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad (2/297) :<h2 dir="rtl">إِنَّ الْمُؤْمِنَ إِذَا أَذْنَبَ كَانَتْ نُكْتَةٌ سَوْدَاءُ فِي قَلْبِهِ، فَإِنْ تَابَ وَنَزَعَ وَاسْتَغْفَرَ صُقِل قَلْبُهُ، فَإِنْ زَادَ زَادَتْ حَتَّى تَعْلُوَ قَلْبَهُ، وَذَاكَ الرَّانُ الَّذِي ذَكَرَ اللَّهُ فِي الْقُرْآنِ: (كَلا بَلْ رَانَ عَلَى قُلُوبِهِمْ مَا كَانُوا يَكْسِبُونَ)</h2>Verily, when a believer commits a sin, a black spot appears in their heart. If they repent, abandon the sin, and seek forgiveness, their heart is polished. But if they continue to sin, the black spot increases until it covers their heart. That is the stain mentioned by Allah in the Quran: “No, but what they have earned has covered their hearts.'" (Ibid)Choosing to continue sin can lead us to hardships and regret, in this life and ultimately on the Day of Judgment, whereas repentance will lead to a cleansing of the soul, multiplied rewards, and a revival of the heart with a stronger determination to avoid the traps of Satan in the future.<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/66/8">66:8</a></blockquote>"Repent to Allah with an honest repentance." The ayah teaches us several key ideas about repentance. It teaches us that our repentance should be sincere, done conscientiously, and not superficially. It teaches us that our repentance should include repentance of all our sins, and that our repentance can act like an advisor ‘nāasih’, for us, therefore in effect deterring us from repeating the same sin.The outcome of such a repentance is mentioned in the same verse (66:8): “so your&nbsp;Lord may absolve you of your sins and admit you into Gardens, under which rivers flow, on the Day Allah will not disgrace the Prophet or the believers with him. Their light will shine ahead of them and on their right.SubhnaAllah. Is it not amazing that the same person who once committed wrong, sinned, and neglected his soul, can then have such a reward?! He is not blacklisted and neither debarred from Allah’s mercy. Such is the reward that Allah promises to those who repent. Not only will he be granted paradise, but he will additionally gain the companionship of the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the day of Judgement and be given a light which will emanate from him on a day surrounded by darkness. May Allah grant us the ability to make sincere repentance! Amen!In this month before Ramadan, let us try to follow the guidance of these verses, seeking to purify our hearts. Let us make a sincere pledge to avoid sinning. Purification: التزكية (Tazkiyah)

We protect our hearts by remembering Allah and seeking refuge from Satan.The physical heart is protected by the ribcage, and similarly, our spiritual heart is protected by our Iman (faith) and righteous deeds, which act like a fortress that Satan&nbsp;tries to infiltrate and destroy by taking control over it. The heart is, therefore, the most valuable yet vulnerable part of us. As humans, we have control over what we permit and allow into our hearts. At times, we let our guard down and allow the enemy to exercise control over our hearts. Satan&nbsp;tries to infiltrate our hearts through doors of anger, lust, arrogance, and envy.Any of these doors could provide a way in for an attack, which is why the Quran instructs us to take Satan as an enemy who is ready to ambush us.<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/35/6">35:6</a></blockquote>The Quran further tells us that the best way to prevent an attack from Satan is to avoid following his footsteps in the first instance. Whoever is lured by his footsteps becomes more susceptible to his influence to a degree where he simply instructs, and we comply. Allah reminds us;<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/24/21">24:21</a></blockquote>In other words, we are to protect the heart like a guard who is vigilant and is aware of his enemy's tactics, and so he remains alert, sensing any potential threat, prepared to counter the threat. Whereas a guard who starts to slack may end up being drugged by his enemy, and so he no longer retaliates, complying with whatever his enemy demands of him. Notice the Quran says, if you follow his footsteps, then he will have more dominance over you.<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/7/200-201">7:200–201</a></blockquote>Just like a guard who, when sensing a threat, becomes more alert, the same is the case with a believer when he feels the onset of Satan’s influence. Remember that our hearts are just like fortresses that Satan tries to infiltrate and destroy by taking control over them. We need to remain on guard, and there are some ways we can do this:<ol dir="ltr"><li>Remain in a constant state of wudhu</li><li>Make constant remembrance of Allah; this leaves no room in our hearts to accommodate the shaytaan.</li><li>Stay in good company and preoccupy yourself with doing something meaningful and charitable.</li><li>Seek protection when we feel that Satan&nbsp;is trying to influence us by reciting isti’azah, {أَعُوذُ باللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطاَنِ الرَّجيم} (I seek refuge in Allah from Shaitaan the accursed), as Allah says; When you recite the Quran, seek refuge with Allah from Satan, the accursed. He certainly has no authority over those who believe and put their trust in their Lord. Protecting our Hearts

The human heart, with its rhythm, beat, and emotions, fluctuates both physically and metaphysically. The verb for fluctuation in Arabic, "قَلَبَ," is inextricably linked to the name given to the heart, "قَلْبٌ." In this sense, the heart reacts to two realities that are at opposite ends of the spectrum. The first is hudā&nbsp;(guidance), which nourishes the heart and enriches it. The second is hawā&nbsp;(desires), which damages and corrupts it.As for "hudā," Allah tells us that the youth of the cave (mentioned in Surah Al-Kahf) were given firm resolve as they believed, and Allah increased them in guidance (hudā).<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/18/13">18:13</a></blockquote>The Quran is hudā in that it enlightens our hearts and guides us to the straight path. The two opposite forces, hudā vis-à-vis hawā, are beautifully highlighted in the story of Musa AS. The Quran recounts the incident when Musa AS wanted to search for light in the dark desert:<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/20/10">20:10</a></blockquote>Among the guidance that Allah communicated to Musa AS at the sacred mountain was a warning to Musa (AS) not to be diverted from the Day of Judgement by those who follow their desires (hawā):<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/20/16">20:16</a></blockquote> This shows that one of the foremost lessons imparted to Musa عليه السلام in this sacred encounter was the nearness of the Hour and the danger of being led astray by those who follow hawā instead of hudā. Allah reminds us that surrendering to unchecked desires pulls the heart away from guidance and leads ultimately to regret. Ramadan, then, becomes a prime opportunity to reflect on what we allow into our hearts. It is a season in which choosing Allah’s merciful guidance over our petty and often destructive desires becomes easier. Through fasting, restraint, and a spiritually charged atmosphere, the heart is softened and more inclined toward hudā.We pray that Allah allows our hearts to turn consistently toward His guidance, and not toward desires that distance us from Him<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/2/185">2:185</a></blockquote>Oftentimes, it is our nafs (the lower self) that acts as a barrier between us and acting upon Allah’s guidance, and in order to tame our desire, we must approach our nafs as the part of ourselves that is in need of constant discipline. The Arabian poet Abu Zua'ib al Huzali (d.648 AD) said:<h2 dir="rtl">وَالنَفسُ راغِبِةٌ إِذا رَغَّبتَها</h2><h2 dir="rtl">فَإِذا تُرَدُّ إِلى قَليلٍ تَقنَعُ</h2>"And the soul is inclined, when you indulge it, but if you restrain it, it becomes content with little."<h2 dir="rtl">والنفس كالطفل إن تهمله شب على</h2><h2 dir="rtl">&nbsp;حب الرضـــــاع&nbsp;وإن تفـطمه&nbsp;ينفطــم</h2>"And the soul is like a child; if you neglect it, it grows attached to breastfeeding, and if you wean it, it becomes independent."<h2 dir="rtl">وجاهد النفس والشيطان واعصهـــما</h2><h2 dir="rtl">وإن هما محـــضاك&nbsp;النـــصح&nbsp;فاتــهــم</h2>"Strive against the desires of the soul and the devil, and disobey them both. If they advise you with something, consider it the opposite."<h2 dir="rtl">فاصرف هواها وحاذر أن تولــــــــــيه</h2><h2 dir="rtl">إن الهـــــــوى ما تولى يصم أو يصــم</h2>"Redirect its inclinations and be cautious not to submit to them. For desires, when submitted to, either deafen or blind."Since our hearts are forever oscillating between good and evil, we can affirm the path our heart takes by either feeding it with hudā (guidance) or by exposing it to the more destructive hawa&nbsp;(desires), thereby corrupting it. In this month of Sha'ban, let us get our hearts accustomed to receiving, listening, and pondering on the best possible hudā: the Quran.What is the remedy of the Quran for the problem of desires?The treatment of the Quran for the problem of desires can be summarised as follows:Firstly, resisting the authority of desire and disobedience to it. Allah Almighty says:<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/79/37-41">79:37–41</a></blockquote>Here, the phrase ‘the position of his Lord’ may mean two things:a-The position of Allah as the Omnipotent Creator who sees and observes us, and whatever we indulge inb-The position before Him when we are made to give a full account of our deeds before HimKeeping the above at the forefront of our minds will deter us from committing sin.Secondly, guidance should be sought through the book of Allah, which He sent through His Messenger, and by adhering to it. In it lies the refuge and sufficiency for souls from following their desires. Allah says:<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/53/23">53:23</a></blockquote>Thirdly, since souls are inclined towards following their desires, the Quran acknowledges this human nature. However, it also discourages us from indulging in satisfying our desires excessively, reminding us of the grave consequences of following our whims. Allah says:<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/45/23">45:23</a></blockquote>Whoever follows their desires and lusts, wherever they may lead, is inclined to obey their desires and disobey Allah. The act of disobedience is bound to affect the heart, leading it to fear something other than Allah. This is a form of servitude to other than Allah and taking desires as a deity besides Him. Preserving our Hearts Through Self Discipline

<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/64/11">64:11</a></blockquote>Strengthening our iman is a pivotal aspect of preparing for Ramadan. The Quran is filled with verses that discuss the importance of faith and its role in our lives. "So remember Me; I will remember you. And be grateful to Me and do not deny Me (Quran <a href="https://quran.com/2:152" target="_blank">2:152</a>). This verse highlights the significance of remembering Allah and acknowledging His presence in our daily lives. The remembrance of Allah is not a part-time pre-occupation; rather, it is a full-time duty.“How can I develop a stronger iman?”To develop stronger iman, we should dedicate time to reciting the Quran, reflecting on its meanings, and contemplating the signs of Allah's creation. This practice helps us deepen our understanding of Islam and strengthen our connection with our Creator. Additionally, engaging in acts of worship with sincerity and devotion, such as performing extra prayers and engaging in voluntary fasting, can contribute to the elevation of our iman and enrich our Ramadan experience.<h3></h3>Allah tells us that true believers are inspired by revelation, which in turn strengthens their faith.<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/9/124">9:124</a></blockquote>When we contemplate the words of Allah and remember Him, we begin to appreciate the physical signs around us, which adds strength to our Iman. Allah says: “Those who remember God standing, sitting, and lying down, who reflect on the creation of the heavens and earth: ‘Our Lord! You have not created all this without purpose- You are far above that!- so protect us from the torment of the Fire.” (Quran <a href="https://quran.com/3:191" target="_blank">3:191</a>)This verse teaches us to contemplate our existence and its signs, coupled with Allah’s remembrance, and the best of remembrance is the Quran. In this blessed month, we can take a moment to do a simple iman boosting exercise, such as the following: 1-Take some time out to study the nature in Allah’s creation. Perhaps something as simple as a bird in flight.2-Read a verse that discusses the same theme. So for the above example, see verse (Quran <a href="https://quran.com/67:19" target="_blank">67:19</a>), in which Allah says: ”Do they not see the birds above them spreading and closing their wings? It is only the Lord of Mercy who holds them up: He watches over everything.”3-Think about the implications of this verse? The design by which Allah has created the bird. Despite having wings, Allah says that it is He who holds them up. If this is true with a bird, then what does this say about us as humans? What does this tell us about reliance upon Allah (Tawakkul)? Does Allah not grant us the blessings of movement, communication, travel, provisions, safety, and fulfilment of our potential, etc, all by His will. Iman ايمان (Faith)

Iman is not static. It goes up and down like a wave, depending on circumstances. As Muslims who want to be closer to Allah, we may chastise ourselves when our iman is low and wonder why we are feeling this way. We may at times find ourselves dropping our guards and sinning (see hadith below). What is important to remember is that the ebbs and flows of iman are completely natural and happen to every believer. What is important is to turn back to Allah in repentance and to seek His continuous guidance.The following hadith gives us hope and reminds us that we will, at times, find ourselves committing sins.Abu Huraira reported: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “By the One in whose hand is my soul, if you did not sin, Allah would replace you with people who would sin, and they would seek forgiveness from Allah, and He would forgive them.” Source: Sahih Muslim 2749“How can I take advantage of both states of Iman?”The key is to know how to modify our behaviour when our iman&nbsp;is high or low, how to live with the challenges of fluctuating iman,&nbsp;and how to ensure that our iman&nbsp;is on an upwards trajectory.When our iman&nbsp;is high, we should essentially try to “ride the wave” and enjoy the “sweetness of iman” that Allah gives us. This period of “iman&nbsp;high” is for us to exert ourselves, improve our base levels, and evaluate our lives overall in terms of our relationship with Allah. In such moments, we should engage in acts of worship to bring spiritual joy and uplift. We can also remember the dua of the prophet اللهمَّ حبِّبْ إلينا الإيمانَ وزيِّنْه في قلوبِنا, (O Allah make iman beloved to us). We should also remember not to become complacent in this phase and remember that our iman&nbsp;is a gift from Allah.<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/49/17">49:17</a></blockquote>At times, we may become complacent with our iman, so Allah sends a trial our way to shape us and to ensure that we continue to strive, struggle, and work hard. This test may come in the form of a decrease in our iman, feeling disheartened or apathetic, and lethargic. During this time, we should try our best to maintain our usual standards, despite not feeling it. Remember that we do not worship Allah in order to experience the sweetness and enjoyment; these are added blessings or gifts or 'side effects'. We worship Allah and strive and struggle even though our nafs&nbsp;is telling us to stay wrapped in our comfortable beds, to spend an extra hour watching Netflix, or to eat that tasty breakfast instead of making a voluntary fast. This striving and struggling – jihad an Nafs – or الصبر على الطاعات / assabr&nbsp;‘la attaa’aat (being persistently patient in doing good), as Imam Nawawi calls it, will mean receiving extra rewards because of the challenge. This will enable us to increase our iman&nbsp;and get through the iman low.<h3></h3>One thing we can do to increase our iman is to seek out the signs (Ayaat) of Allah to increase our iman. As Allah says,” when His revelations are recited to them, and who put their trust in their Lord”&nbsp;(Quran <a href="https://quran.com/8:2" target="_blank">8:2</a>). We can read certain passages of the Quran to incline our hearts to the words of Allah and gravitate towards Him. We can also look to other&nbsp;signs, such as in the following verse, “Do they not see the birds made to fly through the air in the sky? Nothing holds them up except God. There truly are signs in this for those who believe”. (Quran <a href="https://quran.com/16:79" target="_blank">16:79</a>) “What are the factors that increase our iman?”Given that Iman is like a pendulum, going back and forth, we should ask ourselves the crucial question. What are the factors that increase our iman? The Quran repeatedly highlights that it is revelation that increases iman. When we allow our senses to properly absorb the Quran – its recitation, its meaning, and its reflection – it leads to a heightened sense of faith. In this month, as we look forward to embracing Ramadan, let us attune our hearts, our lifestyle, and environment to receive this spiritual uplift that we are so desperately in need of by immersing ourselves<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/8/2">8:2</a></blockquote>Read more on this theme by clicking the following <a href="https://quranreflect.com/posts/22087" target="_blank">Reflection</a>

The Ebbs and Flows of Iman

Iman is always mentioned in the Quran with righteous actions.There are more than sixty-nine Quranic verses that emphasise the close relationship between faith (īmān) and righteous deeds. This repeated pairing highlights their deep connection and constant interplay. True faith does not remain abstract; it necessarily shapes our daily actions, choices, and decisions. Likewise, righteous deeds hold no real value when they are detached from the faith that gives them meaning, direction, and sincerity. Prayer is one of the clearest examples of this relationship. Ṣalāh is not merely a ritual act; it is a physical and visible expression of what resides in the heart. For this reason, the Quran often treats ṣalāh as inseparable from īmān, at times even using it as a marker of faith itself. To establish prayer is to embody faith in action, and to neglect it is to weaken the very foundation of īmān. <blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/2/143">2:143</a></blockquote>This verse was revealed at a time when Allah had ordered that the direction of prayer (qiblah) shift towards Makkah and not Jerusalem. Some of the hypocrites and disbelievers, upon hearing this, taunted Muslims, stating that the prayers which had been offered by the companions who had passed away were bound to be disregarded as they had prayed towards the wrong qiblah. The Quran in response affirmed that their prayers were not discounted. Notice how Allah said, “God would never let your faith&nbsp;go to waste,” as opposed to “let your prayer&nbsp;go to waste.” What we learn from this is the symbiotic relationship between good deeds and faith. When we do either conscientiously, the other is increased too.<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/28/67">28:67</a></blockquote>If I want to know the condition of my iman, perhaps the litmus test is to evaluate my actions. Do they accord with my faith and the Quranic message, and do they conform to Islamic ethics? If they do, then this is proof of iman and its priority in the conscience. If they don’t conform, then maybe now is the time to align our actions with our beliefs and implement change. 'But as for those who repent, believe, and do righteous deeds, it is hoped that they will be among the successful.'&nbsp;(Quran <a href="https://quran.com/28:67" target="_blank">28:67</a>)"<h3></h3>In Sha'ban,&nbsp;the Islamic month preceding Ramadan, we can take note of where we fall short and make a firm intention to improve on our iman, ensuring that our belief is followed through with our actions.Read more on this theme on QuranReflect by clicking the following <a href="https://quranreflect.com/posts/14786" target="_blank">Reflection</a>

The Connection Between Iman and Good Deeds

<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/20/114">20:114</a></blockquote>“What is the purpose of Ramadan?”The purpose of Ramadan is to attain taqwa. Taqwa is like an engine, powering us to put into motion the things we are obliged to do and stopping us from doing things we are prohibited from doing. Taqwa, in essence, means to protect oneself from Allah’s displeasure by obeying His commands and abstaining from what He dislikes. Before Ramadan, we may want to consider our habits, our attitudes towards worship, and our relationship with ourselves and others. As part of this, we want to try and grasp the opportunity to develop the habits that we need to maintain our bond with Allah. Like an engine, this is a month for an oil change, a month where we wash out the remnants of our sins and service our souls to embrace a fresh start to the year, up to the next Ramadan.Here are some ways in which we can improve our self-development in Ramadan to attain taqwa.<ol dir="ltr"><li>Set intentions: Begin the month by setting clear intentions for what you hope to achieve during this time. Whether it's focusing on our prayers, improving patience, or increasing self-discipline, having a goal in mind can keep us motivated throughout the month. Write them down and review them often.</li><li>Focus on Tadabbur (reflecting on the Quran): Use this time to reflect on the Quran: its wisdom and its guidance, and ask yourself, “Are my actions, thoughts, and intentions aligned with what Allah wants from me?” Take some quiet moments each day to engage in Quranic reflection, and consider journaling your findings. This can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself and identify areas for improvement.</li><li>Read and study: Increase your knowledge by reading spiritually enlightening texts such as the seerah&nbsp;of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), by listening to inspirational lectures, or by reading articles that align with your personal interests and spiritual goals. This can help stimulate spiritual growth and provide you with valuable insights and perspectives. Make dua to Allah, relying on the very invocation He has taught us: My Lord! Increase me in&nbsp;knowledge.” (Quran <a href="https://quran.com/20:114" target="_blank">20:114</a>)</li><li>Self-discipline: Ramadan provides us with an ample opportunity to cultivate self-discipline. Whether it is praying in the masjid instead of alone or praying at the start time of the prayer time, Ramadan is the time to do that. However, in order to segue into this, Sha'ban is the right time to start this process. We can also practise resisting unhealthy behaviours and temptations and have more self-control in all aspects of our lives. This can extend beyond abstaining from food and drink to include managing our thoughts, emotions, and actions. Remember, your nafs&nbsp;(ego) is your worst enemy. Even more than Satan. Because the nafs&nbsp;is the receiver that accepts the signal whenever Satan transmits evil. It is the same nafs&nbsp;that caused the first bloodshed committed in the history of mankind, as Allah mentions, “At last his evil soul drove him to the murder of his brother” (Quran <a href="https://quran.com/5:30" target="_blank">5:30</a>)</li></ol><ol dir="ltr" start="5"><li>Sadaqah&nbsp;- Give back: Ramadan is a month of giving and compassion. However, we should start letting go of our fixation on wealth by saving money in Sha'ban to give to those who need it more than us, especially in Ramadan. If you are financially struggling, then perhaps there are other forms of charity, such as volunteer work or any form of giving that resonates with you. By serving others, you not only contribute positively to the ummah but also experience personal growth and satisfaction.</li></ol>Remember, self-development is a lifelong journey, and Ramadan can serve as a catalyst for positive change. Self-development means striving and making continuous efforts to become better tomorrow than you are today. Recognising the need for self-development that encourages us to acquire further skills and expand our knowledge, and improve our behaviour and habits. Ramadan presents us with the most fertile ground for us to plant the seeds of good habits and a new level of engagement with the Quran. It may be, for example, that you wish to:<ul><li>Improve your memorisation or recitation</li><li>Improve the way you communicate with your loved ones</li><li>Change the company you keep</li><li>Improve the manner and frequency of prayer</li><li>Learn and study the essentials of faith</li></ul>Here are some Quranic verses that talk about self-development through reflecting on the creation of Allah. When one contemplates and reflects on the great work of Allah, the horizons open up, the heart becomes tranquil, and the mind evolves and progresses. Several Quranic verses emphasise this, including the following:<blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/96/1-4">96:1–4</a></blockquote>This verse reminds me that just like Allah created us through the many different stages in the embryo, He, SWT (Glorified and exalted is He), completed the design and creation of our bodies in the womb, after which we come to this world. Now it is upon us to use the gifts of our intellect and senses to complete the stages of our moral, spiritual, and intellectual development, which happens through reading and understanding revelation and His signs. Allah wants for us to fulfil and take charge of our spiritual, intellectual, and moral development just like the way He perfected our bodies.In the same surah, Allah informs humanity that finally, after the end of the journey of life, there will be accountability upon our return to Him. <blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/96/8">96:8</a></blockquote>Allah says: <blockquote><a href="https://quran.com/2/281">2:281</a></blockquote>Bearing this in mind, we need to ask ourselves, where have we fallen short? Have we invested time in developing ourselves intellectually, morally, and spiritually by reading and understanding the Quran? Since our time on earth is finite, have we tried to grow spiritually to become better than yesterday? Have we made a sincere effort to purify our hearts?There are many questions we can ask ourselves in this respect. The main thing is to continue striving and making dua.“Do you have any tips on how we can better engage with the Quran this Ramadan?”Here are 10 ways we can engage with the Quran in Ramadan:<ol dir="ltr"><li>Recitation: The Quran is a recited book. Listening to the Quran allows our hearts to respond to Allah’s words, and it softens our hearts, making them more responsive to Allah’s guidance. Active listening is key to purifying our hearts and engaging our souls, minds, and senses with the Quran. Try following a recitation with translation, either in captions or from a Quran translation at the same time, for maximum benefit.</li><li>Reflection: By taking a verse and deeply considering its implications in our lives, thoughts, and feelings, we can enact the Quran’s message into our day-to-day lives. Try taking it slowly and do not become frustrated if it takes time for you to build momentum. Allah is with you, and He will reward you for your efforts.</li><li>Read a translation: There are numerous translations that can be found here on <a href="http://Quran.com" target="_blank">Quran.com</a> in different languages. Reading a portion from the Quran every day with its accompanying translation will allow us to take a deeper dive into its context and will allow us to appreciate our recitation further.</li><li>Read a tafseer: These can be found using the book icon available on every ayah on&nbsp;<a href="https://quran.com/" target="_blank">Quran.com</a></li><li>Write down any questions you have: Write down a question that may arise whilst listening and reading the Quran. Try to search for the answer in the Quran and then ask your imam or someone learned in Quran studies.</li><li>Daily (or weekly) actionable points: For every engagement with the Quran, try to distil some key actionable points. Document these and come back to them to see if you have implemented them. InshaAllah, you will experience the full blessings of the Quran in your life, as you attempt to act upon its guidance, and indeed Allah will reward you.</li><li>Highlight/learn new commonly occurring Quranic vocabulary: As an avid listener/reciter of the Quran, no doubt you will start to notice recurring words and expressions. Make a list of these and try to see if you can recall the meaning of these words without using a translation or dictionary. You will be surprised to see how much you can retain!</li><li>Quran journaling: This is a good way of documenting your journey with the Quran. Read a portion of the Quran and take note of the context, the parables, any new words, names, or stories that you have learnt.
