What we allow through them shapes how we think, feel, and worship.In Surah An-Nur, Allah commands both men and women to lower their gaze before He commands them to guard their chastity. This sequence teaches us something profound: sin begins not with the act, but with the look that precedes it. The unguarded eye weakens the guarded heart.Lowering the gaze is not about blindness to the world; it is about seeing with clarity. It is saying: “My eyes are a trust from Allah, and I will not use them in disobedience to Him.” Every time you turn away from what is forbidden, whether on the street, on your phone, or on a screen, you are performing a silent act of jihad (striving) against the nafs (ego). And Allah promises that whoever leaves something for His sake, He replaces it with something better.In a world saturated with immodesty, scrolling becomes the modern gaze test. Every image, ad, or post can either pull the heart downward or lift it upward. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “The glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Satan. Whoever lowers his gaze for the sake of Allah, He will give him a sweetness of faith that he finds in his heart.” (Musnad Ahmad 4/358)This “sweetness” is no small gift. It is tranquility, focus in prayer, purity of thought, and peace of conscience. When the eyes stop wandering, the heart stops trembling. And when the heart becomes still, it becomes capable of witnessing Allah’s beauty everywhere.Takeaway: What you feed your eyes, you feed your soul. Guard your gaze, and you will find your heart beginning to heal.<h3 dir="ltr">Hadith</h3>“The glance is one of the poisoned arrows of Iblis (Satan). Whoever lowers his gaze for the sake of Allah, He will give him a sweetness of faith which he will find in his heart.” (Musnad Ahmad 4/358) Even though this hadith is considered weak, there is merit in its content, and the advice in it is sound.&nbsp;<h3 dir="ltr">Practical Activity</h3>Action: Today, consciously lower your gaze once when tempted to look at something impermissible, whether on a screen or in real life. When you do, quietly say: ‘Ya Allah, I choose You over desire.’Why it helps:<ul dir="ltr"><li>It transforms temptation into worship.</li><li>It strengthens willpower and trains spiritual discipline.</li><li>It reclaims control from impulse and hands it back to the heart.</li></ul><h2 dir="ltr">Dua </h2><h2 dir="rtl">اللَّهُمَّ طَهِّرْ قَلْبِي مِنَ النِّفَاقِ، وَعَمَلِي مِنَ الرِّيَاءِ، وَلِسَانِي مِنَ الْكَذِبِ، وَعَيْنِي مِنَ الْخِيَانَةِ، فَإِنَّكَ تَعْلَمُ خَائِنَةَ الْأَعْيُنِ وَمَا تُخْفِي الصُّدُورُ</h2> Allāhumma ṭahhir qalbī mina-n-nifāq,wa ʿamalī mina-r-riyāʾ, wa lisānī mina-l-kadhib, wa ʿaynī mina-l-khiyānah, fa innaka taʿlamu khāʾinata-l-aʿyun wa mā tukhfī-ṣ-ṣudūr. O Allah, purify my heart from hypocrisy, my deeds from showing off, my tongue from lying, and my eyes from betrayal. For indeed, You know the treachery of the eyes and what the hearts conceal. The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned that the eyes commit their share of zina (fornication), saying: “The eyes commit zina, and their zina is the gaze.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 6243; Sahih Muslim 2657).This may seem small, but every glance carries spiritual weight. The eyes are like doors: what enters through them shapes what the heart desires. A single unchecked look can plant a seed that grows into temptation, obsession, and eventually regret. That is why Allah did not simply forbid indecency; He forbade approaching it. He wants to protect us not only from the fire but even from the sparks that lead to it.The Prophet Yusuf (peace be upon him) provides a powerful example. When temptation approached him directly, he turned away, saying, “I seek refuge in Allah.” (Quran 12:23). His physical turning away mirrored his spiritual resolve. This act of resistance was not weakness; it was triumph. The true strength of a believer is not in suppressing feelings but in steering them toward obedience.In the modern world, the “single glance” may be a few seconds of a video, a social media feed, or a passing look that lingers longer than it should. The ripple effect follows quickly: first distraction, then guilt, then dullness in prayer. What seemed harmless begins to distance the heart from Allah.But just as one glance can lead to distance, one act of restraint can lead to closeness. The same eyes that once wandered can become eyes that weep in prayer, eyes that seek knowledge, and eyes that lower themselves in humility before Allah.Takeaway: Every glance writes a story in your heart. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, “When a servant commits a sin, a black dot appears on his heart. If he repents, the heart is polished clean; but if he continues, it grows until it covers his heart.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4244)The beauty of Allah’s mercy is that He not only forgives, but He also transforms. Every sincere repentance can elevate you higher than you were before the sin. Why? Because through failure, you discover your need for Allah. Through remorse, you taste humility. Through struggle, you find sincerity.To reclaim spiritual focus, you must first believe that Allah’s mercy is greater than your mistakes. The shame that leads to despair is from Shaytan, but the shame that leads to reform is from Allah. One paralyzes you; the other purifies you.If your eyes have been exposed to what displeases Allah, images, screens, or environments that weakened your heart, repent immediately and sincerely. Delete what you must. Block what tempts you. Replace the habit with Quran, dhikr, or beneficial knowledge. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said, “Every religion has its distinct characteristic, and the characteristic of Islam is hayaa.” (Sunan Ibn Majah 4181). Modesty is what colors every other act of worship. It refines prayer, speech, and intention. It reminds us that Allah sees us, even when no one else does.The Quran beautifully captures this when Allah says, “The clothing of righteousness—that is best.” Physical covering is an expression of inner consciousness. Just as clothes protect the body, hayaa protects the heart. When the heart loses modesty, the eyes wander, the tongue loosens, and the actions follow. But when hayaa fills the heart, every part of the body becomes disciplined.Hayaa does not make a person timid; it makes them dignified. It is not repression; it is refinement. It’s the inner awareness that says: “I don’t want to disappoint the One who honored me.” In an age where shamelessness is marketed as confidence, holding on to hayaa is revolutionary. It is to swim upstream against a current of heedlessness, wearing the dignity of faith like armor.For youth, modesty is a declaration of independence from worldly approval. When you guard your modesty, visually, verbally, or emotionally, you’re saying: “My worth is not defined by who looks at me, but by Who is pleased with me.”Takeaway: Modesty is not just about hiding beauty. It’s about protecting the heart that carries it.
