<p>Surah al-Mutaffifin begins with a warning that is short, sharp, and heavy: “Woe to the defrauders!” Allah does not begin by describing people who reject faith openly, but people who deal unfairly in ordinary exchanges. They want their own share in full, but when it is time to give others their due, they reduce, delay, or diminish.</p>
<p>The ayat mention measuring and weighing, but the lesson reaches far beyond the marketplace. Ibn Kathir explains that this is about taking more when receiving and giving less when owing. Ibn Uthaymin expands the meaning to every relationship where a person demands complete rights from others while falling short in the rights owed to them. A person may want respect but speak harshly, want forgiveness but refuse to forgive, want fairness at work but treat family with carelessness, or expect patience from others while showing little patience themselves.</p>
<p>This is why fairness begins in the hidden places of the heart. The mutaffif is not only the one who cheats with a scale. It can be the one who uses two scales: one for himself and one for everyone else. One scale is generous when judging personal mistakes, but strict when judging others. One scale demands understanding, but gives blame.</p>
<p>For the average Muslim, this surah calls us back to honesty before Allah. Faith is not only prayer and fasting. It is also how we speak when we are upset, how we pay what we owe, how we keep promises, how we treat those who cannot force us to be fair, and how we behave when no one is checking the scale except Allah.</p>
<p>A believer does not ask only, “Did I get my right?” A believer also asks, “Did I give others their right?” That question can cleanse a home, a workplace, a friendship, and a heart.</p>

<p>After exposing the unfair scale, Allah turns the heart toward the Hereafter. The problem of the mutaffif is not only dishonesty. It is forgetfulness. He acts as though the moment of advantage is the whole story. He wins a little in the transaction, keeps a little more for himself, avoids an apology, or withholds a right, then imagines that the matter has ended.</p>
<p>But Allah asks: do such people not think they will be resurrected? This question breaks the illusion that private unfairness disappears. Every hidden imbalance will be brought before the Lord of all worlds. The person who was weak in this life will not be weak before Allah. The person who could not prove their case will not be voiceless before Allah. The person who used position, charm, anger, money, family pressure, or authority to take more than their due will stand like everyone else.</p>
<p>That standing changes how a believer treats people today. If I know I will stand before Allah, I cannot dismiss someone’s complaint simply because they are quieter than me. I cannot delay wages, ignore debts, or demand respect while giving humiliation. I cannot hide behind “that is just how business works” or “that is just how families are.” The tremendous Day makes every ordinary dealing serious.</p>
<p>The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that a Muslim does not wrong another Muslim or abandon him. This is a foundation of fairness: do not become the source of harm, and do not use silence to allow harm when you can help with wisdom.</p>
<p>Remembering the Day of Standing is not meant to paralyze us. It is meant to purify us. It helps us return rights before they become claims on the Day when no money can settle them. It teaches us to prefer a lighter heart over a heavier pocket, a cleaner record over a stronger argument, and Allah’s pleasure over a temporary win.</p>

<p>Surah al-Mutaffifin teaches that repeated wrongdoing does not stay outside the heart. It leaves a mark. A person may begin by taking a little more than they deserve, making one unfair excuse, hiding one truth, or dismissing one person’s pain. At first, the heart may still feel discomfort. But if the sin is repeated and defended, that discomfort weakens. What once felt wrong begins to feel normal.</p>
<p>This is one of the most frightening lessons of the surah. The heart can become stained by what a person keeps doing. The issue is not only that unfairness harms others. It also changes the one who practices it. A person who regularly cheats others may eventually stop seeing it as cheating. A person who constantly demands their own rights may eventually see others’ rights as a burden. A person who ignores reminders may begin to treat revelation as distant, old, or irrelevant.</p>
<p>The ayah says their hearts were stained by what they used to commit. Ibn Kathir connects this meaning to the hadith about sins placing black marks upon the heart until the heart is covered. This does not mean a sinner has no path back. It means delay is dangerous. Every time the heart recognizes a wrong and returns to Allah, that return is a mercy. Every time it refuses, the stain deepens.</p>
<p>For fairness and equity, this lesson is practical. Do not only ask, “Was this action small?” Ask, “What is this action doing to my heart?” A small injustice repeated daily can train the soul to become comfortable with oppression. A small act of fairness repeated daily can train the soul to love justice.</p>
<p>The believer protects the heart by responding quickly: repent, repair, and return. Allah has opened the door, but we must not make stains into habits.</p>

<p>Surah al-Mutaffifin does not end by describing corruption only. It also shows the honor of the virtuous. After warning against those who reduce the rights of others, Allah turns our attention to the people of birr: the righteous, truthful, and generous in obedience. Their ending is not anxiety, exposure, and loss. Their ending is bliss, rest, and a visible glow of delight.</p>
<p>This contrast teaches a powerful lesson. Fairness is not merely an ethical rule. It is part of the path to becoming among the virtuous. The person of birr does not live by the smallest legal loophole or the lowest social standard. They ask what is pleasing to Allah, what restores trust, and what protects people from harm. They do not only avoid fraud in money. They avoid fraud in speech, promises, responsibilities, family roles, and community obligations.</p>
<p>The Prophet (peace be upon him) gave a striking command: help your brother whether he is wronging or wronged. The Companions understood helping the oppressed, but they asked how to help the oppressor. He explained that helping him means stopping him from oppression. That is true mercy. Fairness is not always passive. Sometimes it means gently correcting ourselves. Sometimes it means advising someone we love before their wrongdoing becomes heavier upon them.</p>
<p>This is especially important for the average Muslim who forgets fairness in daily life. We may think justice is only for courts, leaders, or major disputes. But the Quran teaches that justice begins in ordinary scales. The home has scales. The workplace has scales. Friendships have scales. Group chats have scales. Our judgments of people have scales.</p>
<p>The virtuous are those who keep returning to Allah’s measure until their inner life and outer dealings become cleaner. Their reward is not only that they avoided punishment. Allah describes joy on their faces. A heart that gives people their rights for Allah’s sake may taste some peace even before the Akhirah, because it is not carrying the burden of hidden injustice.</p>

<p>This is the balance of the Quran. It warns us so we do not sleep through injustice, and it gives hope so we do not despair of change. Allah loves those who turn to Him in repentance, and He loves those who purify themselves. A believer is not someone who never discovers a crooked scale within the soul. A believer is someone who keeps bringing the scale back to Allah.</p>

They require a heart that remembers the Akhirah, a tongue that refuses exaggeration, hands that return rights, and humility that can admit, “I was wrong.” They require daily habits: staying connected to the Quran, keeping righteous companionship, renewing intentions often, and seeking beneficial reminders before heedlessness settles in.</p>
<p>The Prophet (peace be upon him) warned that wrongs between people must be settled before the Day when dinars and dirhams will not help. This makes fairness urgent, but not hopeless. You can begin today with one right returned, one apology offered, one debt paid, one harsh judgment softened, one double standard abandoned.</p>
<p>Over these five days, the main takeaway is simple: Allah sees the scale. He sees what we take, what we give, what we hide, what we repair, and what we strive to become. The path is not perfection in a single moment. It is sincere return, again and again, until fairness becomes part of worship.</p>
