Tafseer: Al-Anbiya 21:90

فاستجبنا له ووهبنا له يحيى واصلحنا له زوجه انهم كانوا يسارعون في الخيرات ويدعوننا رغبا ورهبا وكانوا لنا خاشعين ٩٠

فَٱسْتَجَبْنَا لَهُۥ وَوَهَبْنَا لَهُۥ يَحْيَىٰ وَأَصْلَحْنَا لَهُۥ زَوْجَهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّهُمْ كَانُوا۟ يُسَـٰرِعُونَ فِى ٱلْخَيْرَٰتِ وَيَدْعُونَنَا رَغَبًۭا وَرَهَبًۭا ۖ وَكَانُوا۟ لَنَا خَـٰشِعِينَ ٩٠

فَٱسۡتَجَبۡنَا

لَهُۥ

وَوَهَبۡنَا

لَهُۥ

يَحۡيَىٰ

وَأَصۡلَحۡنَا

لَهُۥ

زَوۡجَهُۥٓۚ

إِنَّهُمۡ

كَانُواْ

يُسَٰرِعُونَ

فِي

ٱلۡخَيۡرَٰتِ

وَيَدۡعُونَنَا

رَغَبٗا

وَرَهَبٗاۖ

وَكَانُواْ

لَنَا

خَٰشِعِينَ

٩٠

Dus beantwoordden Wij zijn roep en Wij gaven hem Yahya en Wij maakten zijn vrouw geschikt (om te baren). Waarlijk, zij wedijverden in goede daden en zij riepen Ons hoopvol en vol vrees aan en zij vernederden zichzelf voor Ons.

Hadith

يَدْعُونَنَا رَ‌غَبًا وَرَ‌هَبًا (and call Us with hope and fear - 21:90). This may be interpreted to mean that they call Allah Ta` ala both in comfort and distress. The other explanation of the verse is that during their prayers they remain suspended between hope and fear hoping that Allah would forgive their sins and fearing that their lapses may bring on them His displeasure.
