Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "Zād al-Masīr" as follows:

1. The seventy chosen men. (See 7:155) [Ibn Masʿūd, Ibn ʿAbbās]
2. It was all the Children of Israel, except those whom God protected (from making this foolish request). This is the view of Ibn Zayd. He added that this was because Moses had brought them God's Book. They said, "By God, we will not accept what you say until we see God outright and He says, 'This is My Book'!"

Who is it that said "we will not believe in you until..." in this āyah?

Imām Ibn al-Jawzī (d. 597/1201) summarized the scholars' opinions in his book "*Zād al-Masīr*" as follows:

1. "While you were watching each other falling dead".
2. "While you were watching each other being brought back to life".
3. It means: "While you were watching how the punishment descended upon you." This is according to those who said that a fire came down and burned them.
