حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ ـ رضى الله عنه ـ يَقُولُ نَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ فِينَا، كَانَتِ الأَنْصَارُ إِذَا حَجُّوا فَجَاءُوا لَمْ يَدْخُلُوا مِنْ قِبَلِ أَبْوَابِ بُيُوتِهِمْ، وَلَكِنْ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا، فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ، فَدَخَلَ مِنْ قِبَلِ بَابِهِ، فَكَأَنَّهُ عُيِّرَ بِذَلِكَ، فَنَزَلَتْ ‏[quran sura="2" aya_start="189" aya_end="189"]{‏وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا وَلَكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَى وَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا‏}‏‏.‏

بَابُ قَوْلِ اللَّهِ تَعَالَى: {وَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا}

Narrated Abu 'Is-haq:

I heard Al-Bara' saying, "The above Verse was revealed regarding us, for the Ansar on returning from 
Hajj never entered their houses through the proper doors but from behind. One of the Ansar came and 
entered through the door and he was taunted for it. Therefore, the following was revealed: -- 
"It is not righteousness That you enter the houses from the back, But the righteous man is He who 
fears Allah, Obeys His order and keeps away from What He has forbidden So, enter houses through 
the proper doors." (2.189)

"... So enter houses through their proper doors"

Sahih al-Bukhari

حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُوسَى، عَنْ إِسْرَائِيلَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، عَنِ الْبَرَاءِ، قَالَ كَانُوا إِذَا أَحْرَمُوا فِي الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ أَتَوُا الْبَيْتَ مِنْ ظَهْرِهِ، فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ ‏[quran sura="2" aya_start="189" aya_end="189"]{‏وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا وَلَكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَى وَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا‏}‏

باب قَوْلِهِ ‏<a href="https://quran.com/2/189-189">{‏وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا وَلَكِنَّ الْبِرَّ مَنِ اتَّقَى وَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ أَبْوَابِهَا وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُفْلِحُونَ‏}</a>‏

Narrated Al-Bara:

In the Pre-lslamic Period when the people assumed Ihram, they would enter their houses from the 
back. So Allah revealed:-- 
"And it is not righteousness that you enter houses from the back, but the righteous man is he who fears 
Allah, obeys His Orders and keeps away from what He has forbidden. So enter houses through their 
doors." (2.189)

"...It is not A1-Birr (piety, righteousness) that you enter the houses from the back, but A1-Birr (is the quality of the one) who fears Allah." (V.2:189)

حَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ، حَدَّثَنَا غُنْدَرٌ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، ح وَحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى، وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ - وَاللَّفْظُ لاِبْنِ الْمُثَنَّى - قَالاَ حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ، عَنْ أَبِي إِسْحَاقَ، قَالَ سَمِعْتُ الْبَرَاءَ، يَقُولُ كَانَتِ الأَنْصَارُ إِذَا حَجُّوا فَرَجَعُوا لَمْ يَدْخُلُوا الْبُيُوتَ إِلاَّ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا - قَالَ - فَجَاءَ رَجُلٌ مِنَ الأَنْصَارِ فَدَخَلَ مِنْ بَابِهِ فَقِيلَ لَهُ فِي ذَلِكَ فَنَزَلَتْ هَذِهِ الآيَةُ ‏[quran sura="2" aya_start="189" aya_end="189"]{‏وَلَيْسَ الْبِرُّ بِأَنْ تَأْتُوا الْبُيُوتَ مِنْ ظُهُورِهَا‏}‏ ‏.‏

باب

Bara' reported: When the Ansar performed the Pilgrimage, they did not enter their houses but from behind. A person from the Ansar came and he began to enter from his door but it was said to him (why he was doing something in contravention to the common practice of coming to the houses from behind). Then this verse was revealed." Piety is not that you come to the doors from behind" (ii. 189).
