The Overwhelming
088

In the Name of Allah—the Most Compassionate, Most Merciful

88:1

هل اتاك حديث الغاشية ١

هَلْ أَتَىٰكَ حَدِيثُ ٱلْغَـٰشِيَةِ ١

ﭤ
ﭥ
ﭦ
ﭧ
ﭨ

Has the news of the Overwhelming Event reached you ˹O Prophet˺?

وجوه يوميذ خاشعة ٢

وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍ خَـٰشِعَةٌ ٢

ﭩ

ﭪ

ﭫ

ﭬ

On that Day ˹some˺ faces will be downcast,

عاملة ناصبة ٣

عَامِلَةٌۭ نَّاصِبَةٌۭ ٣

˹totally˺ overburdened, exhausted,

تصلى نارا حامية ٤

تَصْلَىٰ نَارًا حَامِيَةًۭ ٤

ﭰ

ﭱ

ﭲ

ﭳ

burning in a scorching Fire,

تسقى من عين انية ٥

تُسْقَىٰ مِنْ عَيْنٍ ءَانِيَةٍۢ ٥

ﭴ

ﭶ

ﭷ

ﭸ

left to drink from a scalding spring.

ليس لهم طعام الا من ضريع ٦

لَّيْسَ لَهُمْ طَعَامٌ إِلَّا مِن ضَرِيعٍۢ ٦

ﭾ

ﭿ

They will have no food except a foul, thorny shrub,

لا يسمن ولا يغني من جوع ٧

لَّا يُسْمِنُ وَلَا يُغْنِى مِن جُوعٍۢ ٧

ﮆ

neither nourishing nor satisfying hunger.

وجوه يوميذ ناعمة ٨

وُجُوهٌۭ يَوْمَئِذٍۢ نَّاعِمَةٌۭ ٨

On that Day ˹other˺ faces will be glowing with bliss,

لسعيها راضية ٩

لِّسَعْيِهَا رَاضِيَةٌۭ ٩

˹fully˺ pleased with their striving,

في جنة عالية ١٠

فِى جَنَّةٍ عَالِيَةٍۢ ١٠

in an elevated Garden,

لا تسمع فيها لاغية ١١

لَّا تَسْمَعُ فِيهَا لَـٰغِيَةًۭ ١١

ﮖ

where no idle talk will be heard.

فيها عين جارية ١٢

فِيهَا عَيْنٌۭ جَارِيَةٌۭ ١٢

In it will be a running spring,

فيها سرر مرفوعة ١٣

فِيهَا سُرُرٌۭ مَّرْفُوعَةٌۭ ١٣

along with thrones raised high,

واكواب موضوعة ١٤

وَأَكْوَابٌۭ مَّوْضُوعَةٌۭ ١٤

and cups set at hand,

ونمارق مصفوفة ١٥

وَنَمَارِقُ مَصْفُوفَةٌۭ ١٥

ﮢ

ﮣ

ﮤ

and ˹fine˺ cushions lined up,

وزرابي مبثوثة ١٦

وَزَرَابِىُّ مَبْثُوثَةٌ ١٦

ﮥ

ﮦ

ﮧ

and ˹splendid˺ carpets spread out.

افلا ينظرون الى الابل كيف خلقت ١٧

أَفَلَا يَنظُرُونَ إِلَى ٱلْإِبِلِ كَيْفَ خُلِقَتْ ١٧

ﮫ

ﮬ

ﮭ

ﮮ

Do they not ever reflect on camels—how they were ˹masterfully˺ created;¹

والى السماء كيف رفعت ١٨

وَإِلَى ٱلسَّمَآءِ كَيْفَ رُفِعَتْ ١٨

ﮯ

ﮰ

ﮱ

ﯓ

ﯔ

and the sky—how it was raised ˹high˺;

والى الجبال كيف نصبت ١٩

وَإِلَى ٱلْجِبَالِ كَيْفَ نُصِبَتْ ١٩

ﯕ

ﯖ

ﯗ

ﯘ

ﯙ

and the mountains—how they were firmly set up;

والى الارض كيف سطحت ٢٠

وَإِلَى ٱلْأَرْضِ كَيْفَ سُطِحَتْ ٢٠

ﯚ

ﯛ

ﯜ

ﯝ

ﯞ

and the earth—how it was levelled out?

فذكر انما انت مذكر ٢١

فَذَكِّرْ إِنَّمَآ أَنتَ مُذَكِّرٌۭ ٢١

ﯟ

ﯠ

ﯡ

ﯢ

ﯣ

So, ˹continue to˺ remind ˹all, O Prophet˺, for your duty is only to remind.

لست عليهم بمصيطر ٢٢

لَّسْتَ عَلَيْهِم بِمُصَيْطِرٍ ٢٢

ﯤ

ﯥ

ﯦ

ﯧ

You are not ˹there˺ to compel them ˹to believe˺.

الا من تولى وكفر ٢٣

إِلَّا مَن تَوَلَّىٰ وَكَفَرَ ٢٣

ﯨ

ﯩ

ﯪ

ﯫ

ﯬ

But whoever turns away, persisting in disbelief,

88:24

فيعذبه الله العذاب الاكبر ٢٤

فَيُعَذِّبُهُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلْعَذَابَ ٱلْأَكْبَرَ ٢٤

ﯭ

ﯰ

ﯱ

then Allah will inflict upon them the major punishment.¹

ان الينا ايابهم ٢٥

إِنَّ إِلَيْنَآ إِيَابَهُمْ ٢٥

ﯲ

ﯳ

ﯴ

ﯵ

Surely to Us is their return,

ثم ان علينا حسابهم ٢٦

ثُمَّ إِنَّ عَلَيْنَا حِسَابَهُم ٢٦

then surely with Us is their reckoning.
