Az-Zukhruf 43:23 وكذالك ما ارسلنا من قبلك في قرية من نذير الا قال مترفوها انا وجدنا اباءنا على امة وانا على اثارهم مقتدون ٢٣
وَكَذَٰلِكَ
مَآ
أَرۡسَلۡنَا
مِن
قَبۡلِكَ
فِي
قَرۡيَةٖ
مِّن
نَّذِيرٍ
إِلَّا
قَالَ
مُتۡرَفُوهَآ
إِنَّا
وَجَدۡنَآ
ءَابَآءَنَا
عَلَىٰٓ
أُمَّةٖ
وَإِنَّا
عَلَىٰٓ
ءَاثَٰرِهِم
مُّقۡتَدُونَ
٢٣
Och så har det varit förr; Vi har aldrig sänt en varnare till ett folk före dig utan att de nöjeslystna veklingarna bland dem sade: "Vi har förstått att detta var våra fäders tro och vi följer deras exempel."

Ibn Kathir (Abridged)
The Idolators have no Proof
Allah condemns the idolators for worshipping others instead of Allah with no evidence or proof for doing so.
أَمْ ءَاتَيْنَـهُمْ كِتَـباً مِّن قَبْلِهِ
(Or have We given them any Book before this) means, before their idolatry.
فَهُم بِهِ مُسْتَمْسِكُونَ
(to which they are hold
