The verse warns against feeling secure from Allah’s punishment, referencing past nations destroyed suddenly. Scholars explain that arrogance blinds people to their vulnerability. In our world today, we may feel safe around the human-erected structures, cities, systems, and authority, all of which can be overturned instantly when Allah’s decree intervenes.
Guidance
The verse contains a warning against arrogance and false security. The verse cites how Allah punished earlier peoples through the earth opening beneath them. Ask Allah for security and protection from His punishment, and make it a habit to constantly thank Him for His continued protection and safety. False security breeds heedlessness. Seek refuge in Allah from heedlessness.
