Commentary

Those who fear Allah inwardly, when alone, unseen by people, receive forgiveness and great reward. This verse highlights that this is sincere fear rooted in faith.

This verse honours those who fear Allah in private, true taqwa that comes from the heart and not fear of people. Scholars explain that such hidden fear leads to forgiveness and immense reward. This verse highlights that this internal awareness creates a person of integrity and depth, whose actions are guided by an unseen moral compass. 

“In the unseen”, there are two views regarding it. One is that they are absent from people, and in this, there is a description of them as being sincere. The other is that the unseen refers to what is hidden from them of the matters of the Hereafter and other things. However, this latter interpretation is more fitting in the verse, “They believe in the unseen” (al-Baqarah 2:3). [Ibn Al Juzayy]

Guidance  

“They will have forgiveness and a mighty reward.” Reward is proportional to the level of sincerity and God consciousness. Develop sincerity in private. Let your Iman and taqwa guide your actions.

Think of a sin you abstain from in public, in fear of losing your integrity before people, but you tend to commit in private. Make your integrity before Allah your foremost priority.
