The story of Dhul-Qarnayn stands as one of the most majestic portraits of leadership in the Quran. Unlike the persecuted youth of the cave or the humble seeker Musa (AS), Dhul-Qarnayn was granted something few can handle: real power. Empire-level power. Influence that stretched across regions. Resources unmatched by the kings of his time. Yet this story is not about his conquests; it is about his character.

Allah tells us plainly: “We established him on earth.”
This is a reminder that power, whether a kingdom, a position, a platform, or even the influence one holds in the family, is something Allah grants. And with every position comes a path, a test, and a responsibility.

As he travels east and west, he encounters different peoples: some oppressed, some vulnerable, some in need of protection. His responses are a masterclass in balanced leadership. For those who persist in wrongdoing, he applies justice. For those who believe and do good, he promises a beautiful reward and gentle treatment. His authority is firm but not cruel; principled but not arrogant.

When he came across a people unable to defend themselves from the corruption of Gog and Magog, he did not mock their weakness, nor use their need to glorify himself. He listened, he guided, and he mobilized them. He built a barrier. One so strong that no enemy could climb or penetrate. Yet, despite this remarkable achievement, he did not attribute any of it to himself.

“This is a mercy from my Lord.”
Here lies the core of his greatness: humility wrapped inside power, gratitude wrapped inside ability, surrender wrapped inside accomplishment. He knew that strength without humility becomes tyranny. Power without justice becomes destruction. Wealth without gratitude becomes corruption. Intelligence without mercy becomes arrogance.

And he knew something else, something many with influence forget: everything built by human hands is temporary. Even the mightiest wall, even the strongest empire, will one day return to dust.

“But when the promise of my Lord comes, He will level it.”

In Makkah, where small chiefs were puffed up with their tribes and titles, this story was a quiet rebuke: look at a man far greater than you in power, yet far more humble than you in front of his Lord.

For us, Dhul-Qarnayn’s story stretches beyond political power. Every person who has any influence over children, students, employees, followers, or even a small circle of friends has a piece of their test. Will you see your position as a throne to sit on or as a bridge to serve through?

Takeaway: True strength is not measured by how many people stand beneath you, but by how much justice, mercy, and humility flow through you. The strongest hearts are the ones that bend before Allah.

Hadith

The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:
“Every one of you is a shepherd, and every one of you will be asked about his flock.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 893; Sahih Muslim 1829)

Leadership is not measured by status, but by the weight of responsibility one carries with sincerity.

Practical Activity

Action: Think of one area in your life where you clearly have influence, as a parent, older sibling, manager, teacher, or friend. Ask yourself honestly: Am I treating this as a status or as a trust? Then choose one small, concrete act of merciful leadership today: listening without interrupting, forgiving a mistake, or quietly helping someone.

Why it helps:

• It helps transform your influence into an act of humility rather than self-importance.

• It purifies your ego by attaching service to your role.

• It allows your leadership to become sadaqah that continues beyond you.

Dua

رَبِّ أَوْزِعْنِىٓ أَنْ أَشْكُرَ نِعْمَتَكَ ٱلَّتِىٓ أَنْعَمْتَ عَلَىَّ وَعَلَىٰ وَٰلِدَىَّ وَأَنْ أَعْمَلَ صَـٰلِحًۭا تَرْضَىٰهُ وَأَصْلِحْ لِى فِى ذُرِّيَّتِىٓ ۖ إِنِّى تُبْتُ إِلَيْكَ وَإِنِّى مِنَ ٱلْمُسْلِمِينَ

rabbī awzi‘nī an ashkura ni‘mataka allatī an‘amta ‘alayya wa ‘alā wālidayya wa an a‘mala ṣāliḥan tarḍāh, wa aṣliḥ lī fī dhurriyyatī; innī tubtu ilayka wa innī mina al-muslimīn.

“My Lord! Inspire me to ˹always˺ be thankful for Your favours which You blessed me and my parents with, and to do good deeds that please You. And instil righteousness in my offspring. I truly repent to You, and I truly submit ˹to Your Will˺”

(Quran 46:15)

Reflection Question

When you are given any kind of influence, big or small, do you instinctively see it as proof of your greatness or as a trust from Allah? How could you use that influence today to reflect His mercy more clearly?
