How To Cultivate Barakah in a Busy Routine
Day 1: Time is a Trust
Quran Verses
Lesson & Reflection
Time is not just a finite resource; it is a trust (amanah) from Allah and a blessing for which we are accountable. In Surah Al-‘Asr (103:1-3), Allah swears by time itself and warns us: unless we fill our time with faith, righteous deeds, truth, and patience, we are in a state of loss. This verse warns of ultimate loss in the Hereafter, yet we can also see a reflection of this loss in our daily lives when time slips away unfruitfully.
In Surah At-Takathur (102:8), Allah makes it clear that we will be questioned about every blessing, and time is one of the greatest. Heedlessness (ghaflah) is not merely unproductivity but, more importantly, neglect of Allah and the Hereafter. This spiritual ailment weakens awareness of our purpose, and its effects often appear in wasted time and procrastination. Moments spent in heedlessness, endless scrolling, or procrastination are not neutral; they can veil the heart and weaken spiritual awareness. They are missed opportunities for growth, purpose, and drawing closer to Allah. Time is life, and with the passing of every hour, it is not only time that is depleting but our very lives.
Every minute holds potential, either to elevate us or drift us away. When we treat time as a blessing from Allah, we begin to filter our actions more consciously. The goal isn’t constant productivity but purposeful living.
The first step to a better routine isn’t in a planner; it’s in the heart. Recognize your time as part of your divine test, and the rest begins to fall into place.
Hadith
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:
“There are two blessings that many people are deceived into losing: health and free time”. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Hadith 6412)
This hadith holds profound depths, as it is common for many to simply exist idly and not live with purpose. Living without a clear purpose means we do not fully appreciate the value of our health and time, as these blessings are often downplayed and neglected.
The phrase “deceived” implies that we often do not keep track of these fleeting blessings and are tricked into thinking that our health and time are endless resources at our disposal. But the reality is quite the opposite.
Practical Activity
Name Your Time Leaks: Identify one way you tend to waste time daily, whether it’s aimless scrolling, late sleep, or overthinking. Replace just 15 minutes of it today with something purposeful: reading the Quran, reflection, or dhikr.
Dua
"O Allah, I ask You to enable me to do good deeds, avoid evil deeds, and love the poor."
(Muwatta Malik Book 15, Hadith 42)
Reflection Question
If I saw time as a sacred trust from Allah, how would that change the way I use just the next hour?
