Lesson & Reflection

After reminding His Messenger (peace be upon him) of the blessings of protection, guidance, and provision, Allah turns his attention toward action: “So do not oppress the orphan.”

This verse marks an important transition in the surah. The earlier verses focused on what Allah had done for His Prophet (peace be upon him). Now Allah teaches him how gratitude should be expressed. True gratitude is not only felt in the heart or spoken with the tongue. It is demonstrated through righteous conduct and compassion toward others.

The command is especially meaningful because the Prophet (peace be upon him) himself was an orphan. He experienced the loss of his father before birth and the loss of his mother during childhood. Allah protected and cared for him throughout those years, placing people in his life who supported and sheltered him.

The word used in the verse, taqhar, carries the meaning of treating someone harshly, humiliating them, overpowering them, or taking advantage of their weakness. Allah forbids every form of mistreatment toward the orphan.

Islam consistently places special emphasis on caring for the orphan because orphans are among the most vulnerable members of society. They may lack protection, support, financial stability, or emotional security. Allah commands believers to treat them with mercy, dignity, and kindness.

The lesson extends beyond orphans alone. While the verse specifically addresses the orphan, it teaches a broader principle: believers should not abuse positions of strength or advantage. The one who has received Allah's blessings should be among the first to show compassion to those who are vulnerable.

One of the beautiful patterns in this surah is that Allah reminds the Prophet (peace be upon him) of a blessing and then directs him toward a related act of mercy. He was protected as an orphan, so he is instructed to care for orphans. This teaches believers to recognize how Allah's favors can inspire service to others.

When a believer remembers Allah's mercy toward them, it should increase their mercy toward His creation. Gratitude and compassion grow together.

The Prophet (peace be upon him) embodied this teaching throughout his life. He cared for the weak, supported those in need, showed kindness to children, and encouraged his followers to do the same. His gratitude to Allah was visible in the way he treated people.

Takeaway:

One of the clearest signs of gratitude to Allah is mercy toward others. The blessings Allah gives us should inspire us to protect, support, and honor those who are vulnerable.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“I and the one who cares for an orphan will be in Paradise like this.”

Then he held his index finger and middle finger close together.

Today, intentionally show kindness to someone who may be vulnerable, overlooked, or in need of support.

This could be:

• Helping a child.

• Calling an elderly relative.

• Assisting someone facing hardship.

• Supporting an orphan charity.

• Making sincere dua for someone struggling.

Perform the act seeking Allah's reward alone.
