Lesson & Reflection

After reassuring His Messenger (peace be upon him) and promising him a better future, Allah now directs his attention to the blessings he has already received.

These verses invite the Prophet (peace be upon him) to look back over his life and recognize the signs of Allah's care that were present long before this moment of difficulty.

“Did He not find you as an orphan, then sheltered you?”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) was born after the death of his father and later lost his mother while still a child. From a worldly perspective, he appeared vulnerable. Yet Allah protected him throughout every stage of his life. He was cared for by his grandfather, then by his uncle Abu Talib, and was never left without support.

The verse reminds us that Allah's protection may arrive through means we do not expect. The Prophet (peace be upon him) experienced hardship, but Allah's care accompanied him through each stage of it.

Allah then says: “Did He not find you lost, then guided you?”

The scholars explain that this does not mean the Prophet (peace be upon him) was misguided. Rather, he had not yet received revelation and did not yet know the details of the guidance Allah would reveal to him. Allah guided him to the truth, honored him with prophethood, and made him a guide for humanity.

This verse highlights one of Allah's greatest blessings: guidance. Wealth, status, and comfort all come and go, but guidance to faith is a gift whose value extends into the Hereafter.

Allah then says: “Did He not find you in need, then satisfied your needs?”

The Prophet (peace be upon him) experienced financial hardship during parts of his life. Allah provided for him, granted him independence from need, and enriched him through His blessings. Scholars explain that this enrichment includes both material provision and contentment of the heart.

A person may possess wealth and still feel poor, while another may possess little yet feel completely content with what Allah has given. True richness begins with reliance upon Allah and satisfaction with His decree.

The sequence of these verses is remarkable. Allah reminds His Messenger (peace be upon him) of three major blessings: protection, guidance, and provision. Each reminder serves as evidence that the Lord who cared for him in the past would continue caring for him in the future.

Believers can benefit from the same lesson. During moments of uncertainty, it is easy to focus on present difficulties while forgetting previous blessings. Yet one of the ways Allah strengthens faith is by encouraging reflection on His favors.

Looking back at Allah's blessings does not remove hardship, but it changes how hardship is understood. It reminds the believer that the One who guided, protected, and provided before remains fully capable of doing so again.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Wondrous is the affair of the believer. There is good for him in every matter, and this is not the case for anyone except the believer. If something pleasing happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If hardship befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him.”

(Sahih Muslim 2999)

Take a few minutes today to remember three blessings Allah has given you during different stages of your life.

Choose:

• One blessing that you witnessed Allah's protection

• One blessing of guidance.

• One blessing of provision.

After reflecting on each one, say, Alhamdulillah. Then ask Allah to help you remain grateful for His favors.
