Lesson & Reflection

Among the verses of the Qur'an, this is one that resonates deeply with the heart: “Has the time not yet come...?”

Notice who Allah addresses. He does not address the disbelievers. He does not address the hypocrites. He addresses the believers.

This alone contains an important lesson. Even believers can experience periods of spiritual weakness, distraction, and heedlessness. Faith remains in the heart, but its effects become weaker. The heart still believes, yet it no longer responds to the Quran as it once did.

Allah asks:

“Has the time not yet come for believers’ hearts to be humbled at the remembrance of Allah and what has been revealed of the truth?”The question is both a loving reminder and a gentle admonition, calling believers to renew their humility before Allah and His revelation. The scholars mention that this verse was revealed as a loving reminder to believers whose hearts needed renewed connection with Allah and His revelation.

A heart that is humble before Allah responds to the Quran differently. It reflects. It remembers. It becomes affected by reminders. It becomes eager to obey and quick to repent.

Allah then warns believers not to become like previous communities that received revelation but allowed long periods of heedlessness to distance them from it.

Over time, their hearts became hardened. Hardness of heart rarely appears suddenly. It often develops gradually through neglect of remembrance, excessive attachment to worldly distractions, persistence in sin, and lack of reflection upon the Quran.

Yet one of the most beautiful aspects of this verse is that Allah does not close the door. Instead, He asks: “Has the time not yet come?” As long as a person is alive, the answer can still be: “Yes. The time has come.” The time to return. The time to repent. The time to reconnect with the Quran. The time to soften the heart through remembrance of Allah.

This verse has inspired countless Muslims throughout history to renew their faith, repent, and devote themselves to Allah. It remains one of the Quran's most powerful invitations to spiritual revival.

Takeaway:

No matter how distant a heart may feel, Allah continues to call it back. A heart that responds to His reminders can be softened through sincere repentance, reflection upon the Quran, and consistent remembrance of Him.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Indeed, there is a piece of flesh in the body. If it is sound, the whole body is sound. If it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. Indeed, it is the heart.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 52; Sahih Muslim 1599)

Practical Activity

Set aside five uninterrupted minutes today with the Quran.

Before you begin, ask Allah sincerely:

“O Allah, soften my heart for Your words.”

Then read or listen slowly to a small portion of the Quran while focusing on its meaning rather than the amount completed.

• Helps cultivate humility and attentiveness before Allah.

Dua

اللَّهُمَّ يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ

Allāhumma yā Muqallibal-qulūb thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik.

O Allah, O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.
