Surah Al-Hadid: Has the Time Not Come?

Day 2: The One Who Holds All

Theme: Allah's dominion, knowledge, and constant awareness of His creation

Quran Verses

Lesson & Reflection

The opening verses of Surah Al-Hadid introduced us to Allah's greatness through His Names and attributes. These next verses deepen that understanding by showing His complete authority, knowledge, and control over creation.

Allah begins by reminding us that He created the heavens and the earth, then established Himself upon the Throne in a manner befitting His Majesty. This opening establishes a fundamental truth: Allah is the Creator and Sovereign over everything that exists.

The verses then move from Allah's greatness above creation to His complete knowledge of creation. “He knows whatever goes into the earth and whatever comes out of it, and whatever descends from the sky and whatever ascends into it.” Nothing escapes His knowledge. Every seed buried beneath the soil. Every drop of rain descending from the sky. Every deed raised by the angels. Every creature moving through creation. Allah knows them all perfectly.

Then comes one of the most profound statements in the Quran: “And He is with you wherever you are.”

The scholars explain that this does not mean Allah is physically present within creation. Allah created the heavens and the earth and then established Himself over the Throne in a manner that befits His Majesty. Nothing about them is hidden from Him. No person is hidden from Him. No place is beyond His knowledge. No circumstance escapes His awareness. The verse concludes:

“For Allah is All-Seeing of what you do.”

This is the foundation of muraqabah: living with the awareness that Allah sees us at all times.

The next verse reminds us: “To Him belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth.”

Everything people compete for ultimately belongs to Allah. Positions, wealth, influence, and power are temporary trusts that will eventually return to their true Owner.

“And to Allah all matters are returned.” Every affair returns to Him. Every dispute. Every injustice. Every secret. Every soul.

The final verse then brings the reflection even closer: “And He knows best what is hidden in the heart.”

The verses begin with the heavens and the earth and end with the human heart. Allah knows the movements of galaxies and the thoughts hidden within a chest with equal perfection.

What a remarkable reality: The Lord above the Throne knows every fear, hope, intention, and struggle that remains hidden from everyone else.

Takeaway:

Nothing is beyond Allah's knowledge, power, or authority. The believer finds comfort and accountability in knowing that the One who controls the heavens and the earth also knows what is hidden in the heart.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him before you. If you ask, ask Allah. If you seek help, seek help from Allah.”

(Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2516)

Practical Activity

Choose one ordinary moment today:

  • Before sending a message.

  • Before entering a meeting.

  • Before speaking.

  • Before making a decision.

Pause briefly and remind yourself:

Allah sees me and knows my intention.

Then act in the way most pleasing to Him.

How it helps:

  • Develops muraqabah (awareness of Allah).

  • Improves sincerity.

  • Strengthens trust in Allah's knowledge and wisdom.

Dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْهُدَى وَالتُّقَى وَالْعَفَافَ وَالْغِنَى

Allāhumma innī as'alukal-hudā wat-tuqā wal-ʿafāfa wal-ghinā.

O Allah, I ask You for guidance, piety, chastity, and sufficiency.

(Sahih Muslim 2721)

Reflection Question

How would your daily choices change if you consistently remembered that Allah sees every action, knows every intention, and is aware of every thought hidden in your heart?
