Lesson & Reflection

Surah Al-Insan begins by taking us back to a reality we rarely consider. A time before we existed. Allah asks: “Is there not a period of time when each human is nothing yet worth mentioning?”

The question is not seeking information. It is calling us to reflection. There was a real period when none of us existed. No name. No identity. No achievements. No possessions. No reputation. Nothing that people could recognize or remember. This is inclusive of every human being who has ever walked on earth. 

The scholars explain that Allah reminds human beings of their beginning in order to cultivate humility and gratitude. Before every blessing we now enjoy, there was a time when we were not present to experience any of them. When we are reminded that our existence is contingent on our Creator’s will, we are humbled and immediately reminded that our existence is not without purpose. 

This verse does not diminish the value of the human being. Rather, it teaches us where our value comes from. Our dignity, blessings, and every good we possess come from Allah, and our true rank before Him is determined by faith and taqwa. He brought us into existence. He gave us life. He gave us hearing, sight, intellect, and guidance. Everything we possess begins with His favor.

One of the remarkable features of this verse is that Allah begins the surah with nonexistence before speaking about creation, testing, guidance, gratitude, and reward.

The lesson is profound: A person who remembers where they came from becomes less likely to be arrogant. A person who remembers that existence itself is a gift becomes more grateful for every blessing that follows.

The verse also provides comfort. People often seek significance through recognition, status, or approval from others. Yet Allah reminds us that our existence itself began without any of those things. Our value does not depend on being noticed by people. It depends on the One who created us and gave us purpose.

We, therefore, learn to view life differently. Every breath becomes a gift. Every opportunity becomes a trust. Every day becomes another chance to thank Allah for bringing us from nonexistence into existence.

Takeaway:

Humility begins when we remember that we did not bring ourselves into existence. Everything we are and everything we have is a gift from Allah.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“None of you will enter Paradise because of his deeds alone.”

They said, “Not even you, O Messenger of Allah?”

He said:

“Not even me, unless Allah envelops me in His mercy.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 5673)

Practical Activity

Set aside one quiet minute today and reflect on this reality:

There was a time when I did not exist, yet Allah brought me into being.

Then thank Allah for three blessings you often take for granted.

• Increases gratitude.

• Reminds the heart that existence itself is a favor from Allah.

Dua

اللَّهُمَّ أَعِنِّي عَلَى ذِكْرِكَ وَشُكْرِكَ وَحُسْنِ عِبَادَتِكَ

Allāhumma aʿinnī ʿalā dhikrika wa shukrika wa ḥusni ʿibādatik.

O Allah, help me to remember You, thank You, and worship You in the best manner.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 1522)
