After reminding us that there was a time when the human being was nothing worth mentioning, Surah Al-Insan now explains why Allah brought us into existence. Allah says that He created the human being “in order to test them.” This single phrase changes how we understand life. We were not created without purpose, nor left without responsibility. Life is a test, and every blessing we receive is part of that test. In this life, our existence is not eternal, and the sole purpose is to test us. In the afterlife, existence is eternal in reward or punishment.  

Allah then reminds us of our beginning: “from a drop of mixed fluids.” The human being begins in weakness and dependence, then Allah forms, develops, and strengthens them. No one creates themselves, sustains themselves, or owns the abilities they use each day. This reminder protects the heart from arrogance and prepares it for gratitude.

Allah then says, “so We made them hear and see.” He did not test the human being without giving them the means to recognize guidance. Hearing and sight are not only physical abilities. They are trusts. Through hearing, a person receives revelation, advice, reminders, and truth. Through sight, a person sees Allah’s signs in creation and observes the consequences of choices around them.

Then Allah says, “We already showed them the Way.” This is from His mercy. Accountability comes after guidance has been made clear. Allah sent messengers, revealed scripture, placed signs throughout creation, and gave people the ability to reflect. Allah has made the path clear through revelation, His signs, and His messengers, and He guides those who sincerely seek Him by His permission and mercy. The verse ends with the defining human response: “whether they choose to be grateful or ungrateful.” Gratitude here is not only a feeling. It is faith, obedience, humility, and using Allah’s blessings in ways that please Him. Ingratitude is not only denying blessings with the tongue. It can also appear when a person misuses what Allah has given or lives as though those blessings belong to them independently.

Surah Al-Insan teaches us that the righteous are not simply those who receive blessings but those who respond to blessings correctly. They hear, see, reflect, choose, and act with gratitude.

Takeaway:

You were not created merely to exist. You were created to be tested, guided, and given the opportunity to respond to Allah with gratitude through your choices.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Wondrous is the affair of the believer. There is good for him in every matter, and this is not the case for anyone except the believer. If something pleasing happens to him, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If hardship befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him.”

(Sahih Muslim 2999)

Practical Activity

Today, pause before one deliberate choice, such as how you speak, respond, spend, or use your time. Ask yourself: “Is this gratitude in action?” Then choose the response that is most pleasing to Allah.
