Surah Al-Waqi'ah concludes by bringing the reader to one of the most certain moments every human being will face: death.

Allah directs our attention to the final moments of life, when the soul reaches the throat, and those nearby can do nothing to prevent what has been decreed. Family members may gather, doctors may try to help, and loved ones may watch with concern, yet no one can return the departing soul once Allah commands its departure.

Allah then says: “And We are nearer to such a person than you, but you cannot see.”

Many scholars explained this nearness as referring to Allah's angels who are present at the moment of death, though those standing nearby cannot see them.

The verses then challenge those who denied resurrection. If human beings truly possessed ultimate control, they would be able to return the soul after it departs. Yet every person eventually reaches a moment where worldly power, wealth, status, and strength can no longer help. At that moment, the realities of the Hereafter begin to unfold.

Allah once again divides humanity into three groups. Those brought near to Allah receive serenity, fragrance, and glad tidings of the reward prepared for them. The people of the right are greeted with peace and reassurance. The misguided deniers, however, face a very different reception, one marked by punishment and regret.

The surah ends with a powerful declaration: “Indeed, this is the absolute truth.”

After describing resurrection, judgment, Paradise, Hell, creation, revelation, and death, Allah leaves the reader with certainty. Far from being stories, metaphors, or possibilities, these are realities that every soul will eventually witness.

The final command is: “So glorify the Name of your Lord, the Greatest.”

The believer's response to these reminders is worship, humility, gratitude, and preparation for the meeting with Allah.

Death is the moment when the realities of the Hereafter begin to unfold. The wise believer prepares for that meeting through faith, repentance, obedience, and remembrance of Allah before the moment arrives.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Angels come to the dying person. If he was righteous, they say: ‘Come out, O good soul that was in a good body. Come out praiseworthy and receive glad tidings of mercy and fragrance…’”

Practical Activity

Spend a few quiet minutes tonight reflecting on your eventual return to Allah. Ask yourself: "If my soul were taken tonight, what act of obedience would I most wish I had performed more consistently?"

Then act upon one answer immediately. Pray two rak'ahs, seek forgiveness, reconcile with someone, give charity, or recite a portion of the Quran.

اللَّهُمَّ أَحْيِنِي مَا كَانَتِ الْحَيَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي وَتَوَفَّنِي إِذَا كَانَتِ الْوَفَاةُ خَيْرًا لِي

Allāhumma aḥyinī mā kānatil-ḥayātu khayran lī wa tawaffanī idhā kānatil-wafātu khayran lī.

O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and cause me to die when death is better for me.

Surah Al-Waqi'ah begins with the certainty of the Resurrection and concludes with the certainty of death. Between these two realities, Allah reminds us of the categories of people on the Day of Judgment, the rewards of Paradise, the punishments of Hell, the signs found throughout creation, and the majesty of His revelation.

Throughout the surah, one message remains clear: this worldly life is temporary, and every soul will return to Allah.

The surah encourages believers to strive for excellence in faith, remain grateful for Allah's blessings, reflect upon His signs, honor His revelation, and prepare for the Hereafter through righteous deeds.
