After describing the people of Paradise and the people of Hell, Surah Al-Waqi'ah presents a series of signs that point to Allah's power and the certainty of resurrection. Allah directs our attention to things we encounter every day. Rather than presenting distant or hidden signs, He calls us to reflect on realities that surround us constantly.

The first sign is our own creation. Every human being began from a small and humble origin. None of us created ourselves, chose our appearance, or determined the circumstances of our birth. Allah reminds us that the One who created us the first time is fully capable of bringing us back to life after death.

The verses then turn to the crops that grow from the earth. People plant seeds and work the land, but they do not create the life within the seed. Allah alone causes growth to occur. The growth of plants serves as one of the many signs Allah points to as evidence of His ability to resurrect the dead.
Next comes water. Every living creature depends upon it, yet Allah alone sends it down from the clouds. Allah reminds us that if He willed, He could make the water intensely salty, bitter, and unusable. This sign teaches gratitude and reminds us that even the most basic of the necessities of life remain entirely dependent upon His mercy.

The final sign is fire. Fire provides warmth, light, and countless benefits, yet its existence is also a reminder of Allah's power. The same fire that benefits people can also become a source of destruction. Allah describes it as both a provision and a reminder.

Each of these questions calls the believer to reflect. Creation, growth, water, and fire all testify to Allah's wisdom, power, and authority. They remind us that resurrection is not difficult for the One who created and sustains everything we see around us.

The signs of Allah's power are present throughout creation. The One who created life the first time, causes plants to grow, sends down water from the sky, and created fire, is fully able to resurrect His creation and bring them to account.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

"There is none among you except that his place in Paradise or Hell has been written."

The Companions asked, "Should we not rely upon that?"

He replied:

"Act, for everyone will be facilitated toward that for which he was created."

(Sahih al-Bukhari 4949; Sahih Muslim 2647)

Practical Activity

Set some time aside today and really reflect on this portion of the Surah. Try to answer these rhetorical questions. Ponder over your humble beginnings. Think about your food, water, and warmth. What if your food was gone, your water salty, and you had no warmth?
