The opening of Surah Al-Waqi'ah begins with a declaration of certainty: “When the Inevitable Event takes place, then no one can deny it has come.”

Allah does not say if this event occurs. He says when. The Day of Resurrection is not a possibility or a distant idea. It is a reality that every human being will witness. The name Al-Waqi'ah itself refers to the Event that will certainly come to pass.

Allah then says: “It will debase ˹some˺ and elevate ˹others˺.”

On that Day, the standards by which people measured success in this world will no longer matter. Wealth, status, reputation, and power will not benefit a person unless they were accompanied by faith and righteous deeds. Those who humbled themselves before Allah may be raised in rank, while those who were arrogant and heedless may find themselves disgraced. It is a day in which true accountability will take place, and each soul shall be met with what it earned. May Allah make us among those who are blessed with an easy and swift reckoning. Amen

The surah then describes the violent shaking of the earth and the crushing of the mountains until they become scattered dust. Mountains are among the strongest and most stable features on Earth. Yet Allah reminds us that even they will crumble when His command comes. If mountains cannot remain, how can we place our trust in the temporary things of this world?  Other verses in the Quran describe the fact that the very mountains which we see as so formidable and strong will pass by like clouds:

“Now you see the mountains, thinking they are firmly fixed, but they are travelling ˹just˺ like clouds. ˹That is˺ the design of Allah, Who has perfected everything. Surely He is All-Aware of what you do. (Quran: 27:88)

The early verses of this surah call the believer to reflect deeply. Life often feels permanent when routines are familiar and days pass quickly. Yet these verses pull back the curtain and remind us that this world is only a temporary stage before the greater reality of the Hereafter.

Classical scholars mention that these verses are a warning to the heedless and a reminder for the believer. They encourage us to evaluate our priorities before the Day arrives when deeds are weighed, and truths are fully revealed. Every passing day brings us closer to the meeting with Allah. The wise person prepares for that meeting while there is still time.

Takeaway:

The certainty of the Last Day helps a believer see the world as it truly is: temporary, passing, and not worthy of being placed above obedience to Allah. When the Hereafter becomes real in the heart, priorities begin to change, and actions become more purposeful. This surah helps us overcome the delusion of life and removes our sense of misplaced security in it. 

Hadith

Abu Huraira reported Allah's Messenger (peace be upon him) as saying: Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, will take in His grip the Earth on the Day of Judgment, and He will roll up the sky in His right hand and will say: ‘I am the Lord; where are the sovereigns of the world?’

(Sahih Muslim 2787)

Practical Activity

In one of your prayers today, recite the opening verses of Surah Al-Waqi'ah slowly and attentively. When you recite the words:

"When the Inevitable Event takes place..." pause briefly and reflect on the certainty of the Day of Resurrection and your meeting with Allah. Then renew your intention to spend the remainder of your day in a way that would please Him.

• Encourages sincere self-accountability.

• Helps align daily actions with eternal priorities.

Dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ النَّارِ

 Allāhumma innī as'aluka al-jannah wa aʿūdhu bika mina al-nār.
O Allah, I ask You for Paradise and seek refuge in You from the Fire.

(Sunan Abi Dawud 792)

This ties directly into remembering the Last Day and preparing for what comes after it.

If you knew that tomorrow would be your final day before standing before Allah, what is one habit you would abandon or one act of obedience you would begin today?

This keeps the focus on preparation for the Hereafter while remaining practical and spiritually grounded.
