Lesson & Reflection

As Surah Ar-Rahman continues, Allah draws attention to the diversity found throughout His creation.

“He created humankind from sounding clay like pottery and created jinn from a smokeless flame of fire.”

Although humans and jinn were created from different substances, both are creations of Allah, both are accountable to Him, and both are addressed throughout this surah. The contrast is striking. Human beings were created from clay, a substance associated with the earth. Jinn were created from smokeless fire, a creation hidden from human sight. Yet despite their differences, both depend entirely upon the same Lord.

This is the first lesson of the passage: difference in origin does not remove shared responsibility before Allah. The refrain follows: “Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?”

The question is directed to both humanity and jinn alike. Regardless of their differences, neither can deny the favors of their Creator. Allah then says: “He is Lord of the two easts and the two wests.”

Scholars explain that this refers to the changing points of sunrise and sunset throughout the year. As the seasons change, the positions shift according to Allah's decree. What appears constant to us is actually governed by remarkable precision and order.

The verses then direct our attention to another sign: “He merges the two bodies of water, yet between them is a barrier they never cross.”

Allah created fresh and salt water with different qualities and purposes. Though they meet, Allah has established boundaries and laws that govern them. This is another reminder of His wisdom and control over creation.

From these waters emerge pearls and coral, valuable blessings that benefit humanity. Even from places we may rarely think about, Allah brings forth beauty, provision, and benefit.

The passage repeatedly moves from signs of creation to the question: “Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?” The purpose is not merely to inform. It is to awaken gratitude. Every contrast, every boundary, every provision, and every blessing points back to the One who created them.

One of the lessons found throughout these verses is that Allah's creation is filled with diversity, yet all of it operates under His command. Variety is not a sign of disorder. Rather, it is part of the wisdom and beauty Allah placed within His creation.

Takeaway:

The diversity found throughout creation points to the wisdom, power, and mercy of Allah. Differences in creation do not diminish Allah's lordship, power, and authority over all of it.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

“Allah created Adam from a handful of soil taken from all parts of the earth. Therefore, the children of Adam came according to the earth. Among them are red, white, black, and those in between; some are easygoing, some harsh, some good, and some otherwise.”

(Sunan Abi Dawud 4693)

These differences remind us of Allah's creative power, while honor before Allah is determined by taqwa and obedience to Him

Practical Activity

Today, make a conscious effort to appreciate a difference that Allah has placed in His creation.

This could be:

• Showing kindness to someone from a different background.

• Appreciating a quality in another person that differs from your own.

• Reflecting on the diversity of people, languages, cultures, and environments Allah created.

Then thank Allah for the wisdom found in His creation.

How it helps:

• Increases gratitude for Allah's signs.

• Develops humility and respect for others.

• Encourages reflection on Allah's wisdom in diversity.

• Since humans are created weak and dependent upon Allah, this Prophetic supplication reminds us to seek His protection from weaknesses that prevent obedience

Dua

اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَالْهَرَمِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ عَذَابِ الْقَبْرِ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ فِتْنَةِ الْمَحْيَا وَالْمَمَاتِ

Allāhumma innī aʿūdhu bika minal-ʿajzi wal-kasal wal-jubni wal-haram wal-bukhl wa aʿūdhu bika min ʿadhābil-qabr wa aʿūdhu bika min fitnatil-maḥyā wal-mamāt.

O Allah, I seek refuge in You from helplessness, laziness, cowardice, old age, miserliness, the punishment of the grave, and the trials of life and death.
