Surah Ar-Rahman: The Surah of Mercy

Day 6: Gardens of Two Springs

Theme: The reward prepared for those who fear standing before Allah

Quran Verses

Lesson & Reflection

After describing accountability and the fate of those who denied Allah's guidance, Surah Ar-Rahman now turns to one of the most beautiful descriptions of reward in the Quran.

“And whoever is in awe of standing before their Lord will have two Gardens.” The passage begins with a quality of the heart: fearing the standing before Allah. This fear is not despair, panic, or hopelessness. It is reverence. It is the awareness that one day every person will stand before their Creator and answer for their deeds.

Such awareness influences how a believer lives. It encourages sincerity, restrains sin, strengthens repentance, and motivates obedience. For those who live with this awareness, Allah promises two gardens.

The scholars differed regarding some details of the two gardens, but they affirm that they represent immense reward, honor, and blessing prepared by Allah for His righteous servants. The Quran then paints a scene of abundance and beauty. Lush branches stretch throughout the gardens. Flowing springs provide refreshment and life. Every type of fruit is available. Comfort, peace, and provision surround the people of Paradise. The descriptions emphasize that nothing in Paradise is deficient, temporary, or difficult to obtain. The fruits are near. The comfort is complete. The blessings are abundant.

Allah also mentions the companions of Paradise as part of the honor and reward prepared for the believers. These are real blessings that Allah has promised His righteous servants, rewards far beyond what human beings can fully imagine in this life.

Throughout the passage, the refrain continues: “Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?” The repetition reminds humanity and jinn that Paradise itself is among the greatest manifestations of Allah's mercy. The section culminates with one of the most beautiful questions in the Quran: “Is there any reward for goodness except goodness?”

Those who believed, worshipped, repented, struggled against their desires, and sought Allah's pleasure will not find their efforts lost. Allah rewards goodness with goodness, and His reward is always greater than the deeds His servants offer.

The believer, therefore, continues striving, not because Paradise is earned solely through deeds, but because righteous deeds are a sign of sincere faith and a means through which Allah grants His mercy.

Takeaway:

The fear of Allah that leads to obedience is not a burden. It is a path to peace, protection, and eternal reward. The one who remembers the meeting with Allah in this life is promised a far better meeting in the next.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

Allah says:

“I have prepared for My righteous servants what no eye has seen, no ear has heard, and what has never crossed the heart of any human being.”

(Sahih al-Bukhari 3244; Sahih Muslim 2824)

Practical Activity

Today, choose one act of obedience that requires a small sacrifice.

Examples include:

Lowering your gaze.

Holding back an angry response.

Giving charity privately.

Praying with greater focus.

Leaving a temptation for Allah's sake.

Perform it sincerely while remembering that Allah sees every sacrifice made for His pleasure.

How it helps:

Connects daily actions to the Hereafter.

Strengthens sincerity.

Trains the heart to value Allah's reward over immediate desires.

Reflection Question

What is one act of obedience you find difficult today, and how might remembering Allah's promised reward help you perform it more consistently?
