Surah Ar-Rahman: The Surah of Mercy

Day 7: The Endless Favors

Theme: Gratitude to Ar-Rahman for His countless blessings

Quran Verses

Lesson & Reflection

As Surah Ar-Rahman approaches its conclusion, Allah continues describing the rewards prepared for the people of Paradise. After mentioning the first two gardens, which many commentators understood to be of a higher rank, Allah describes two additional gardens filled with beauty, comfort, and provision. Their greenery is lush, their springs flow abundantly, and their fruits are plentiful.

These verses remind us that Allah's generosity is vast. The rewards of Paradise are not limited to a single blessing or experience. They encompass beauty, peace, companionship, comfort, security, and everlasting joy.

Throughout these descriptions, one question continues to return: “Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?” By this point in the surah, the question has followed us through every stage of existence. Allah asked it after mentioning the Quran. He asked it after describing creation. He asked it after speaking about balance, provision, oceans, ships, judgment, Hell, and Paradise. The repetition is intentional. The surah is teaching humanity and jinn how to see Allah's signs, blessings, warnings, and promises correctly.
Every blessing points back to Allah. Every sign points back to Allah. Every warning points back to Allah. Every reward points back to Allah. The repeated question gradually trains the heart to respond with gratitude rather than heedlessness. The final verse then gathers the entire surah into a single conclusion: “Blessed is the Name of your Lord, full of Majesty and Honour.”

The surah began with Ar-Rahman, the Most Merciful. It ends by praising the Lord of Majesty and Honor. Throughout the surah, Allah's mercy, majesty, justice, warning, and generosity are shown through His perfect wisdom and lordship. Allah provides, teaches, forgives, warns, judges, and rewards according to His perfect wisdom.

One of the beautiful lessons of Surah Ar-Rahman is that gratitude is not merely a response to receiving blessings. Gratitude is recognizing the One who gave them.

When a believer understands this, the refrain of the surah becomes personal.  “Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?” The answer becomes clear: None of them.

Takeaway:

The more a believer recognizes Allah's favors, the more gratitude fills the heart. Surah Ar-Rahman teaches us to see every blessing, every sign, and every opportunity to return to Allah as a gift from Ar-Rahman.

Hadith

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) recited Surah Ar-Rahman to his Companions. They remained silent. He then said:

“I recited it to the jinn, and they responded better than you. Whenever I recited, ‘Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?’ they said: ‘None of Your favors do we deny, our Lord. To You belongs all praise.’”

(Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3291)

Practical Activity

Today, recite: “Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?”

After reciting the refrain, you may respond with words of gratitude, such as: La bishay'in min ni'amika Rabbana nukadhdhib, falaka al-hamd (None of Your favors do we deny, our Lord. To You belongs all praise.) (Al-Thirmidhi 5138)

Lā bishay'in min niʿamika Rabbana nukadhdhib, falakal-ḥamd.

(None of Your favors do we deny, our Lord. To You belongs all praise.)

Then spend a few moments reflecting on specific blessings Allah has given you.

How it helps:

Strengthens gratitude.

Connects the heart to the central message of the surah.

Turns reflection into gratitude, dhikr (remembrance of Allah), and obedience

Dua

يَا ذَا الْجَلَالِ وَالْإِكْرَامِ

Yā Dhal-Jalāli wal-Ikrām.

O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.

(Riyad as-Salihin 1491)

Reflection Question

As you complete Surah Ar-Rahman, which favor of Allah has increased your gratitude the most, and how will you thank Him for it through your actions?

Conclusion and Next Steps

Surah Ar-Rahman is a journey through the signs, blessings, warnings, and promises of Allah. It begins with the gift of the Quran and concludes with praise of the Lord who revealed it. Throughout the surah, Allah repeatedly asks: “Then which of your Lord's favours will you both deny?”

This question is not merely meant to be recited. It is meant to be answered through gratitude, worship, obedience, and remembrance.

To continue living by this surah:

Reflect regularly on Allah's blessings.

Recite and study the Quran consistently.

Practice justice and balance in your dealings.

Remember accountability before Allah.

Increase your longing for Paradise.

Frequently praise and thank Allah for His favors.

Every lesson in Surah Ar-Rahman ultimately returns to one truth:

All blessings come from Ar-Rahman. And every blessing calls us back to Him.

“Blessed is the Name of your Lord, full of Majesty and Honour.”
