Surah Ar-Rahman: The Surah of Mercy
Day 2: The Measure of the Heavens
Theme: Divine order, justice, and gratitude
Quran Verses
Lesson & Reflection
After introducing the Quran as one of Allah's greatest favors, Surah Ar-Rahman directs our attention to another sign of His mercy: the remarkable order found throughout creation.
“The sun and the moon travel with precision.”
The movements of the sun and moon are not random. Allah has set them upon precise courses that serve countless purposes for His creation. Through them, people recognize time, seasons, and the passage of days and years. Their consistency reflects Allah's wisdom, power, and perfect control over His creation.
Allah then says: “The stars and the trees bow down in submission.”
Everything in creation submits to Allah according to the way He created it. The stars, trees, mountains, animals, and all other creatures operate according to His command. They fulfill the purpose for which they were created without resistance.
The surah then introduces a profound concept: “He raised the sky and set the balance.”
The word mīzān (balance) carries the meaning of measure, justice, and proper order. Allah established balance within the universe, and He commands human beings to uphold balance in their own lives and dealings.
Notice the connection in the verses. Allah first describes order in creation and then immediately commands: “So that you do not defraud the scales. Weigh with justice and do not give short measure.” The message is powerful. The Lord who established harmony in the heavens also commands fairness and justice on earth.
Islam does not separate worship from character. Honesty in business, fairness in judgment, fulfilling trusts, and treating people justly are all part of living according to the balance Allah has established.
After mentioning the heavens, Allah directs our attention to the earth and its provisions: fruits, grains, palm trees, and fragrant plants. These are blessings people experience every day, yet often overlook.
The movement from sky to earth is striking. Allah reminds us of the vast order of the universe and then draws our attention to the food we eat and the provisions we depend upon. Both are signs of His mercy.
The passage concludes with the first occurrence of the refrain that echoes throughout the surah: “Then which of your Lord's favors will you both deny?” This question is directed to both humanity and jinn. After witnessing the order of creation, the blessings of provision, and the command of justice, what response remains except gratitude?
Takeaway:
The balance Allah established in creation is a reminder to establish balance in our own lives. Gratitude to Allah includes living with honesty, justice, and fairness toward His creation.
