Surah Ash-Sharh: The Expansion of the Heart
Day 5: The Call to Continue
Theme: Relief creates space for renewed devotion
Quran Verse
Lesson & Reflection
After reminding His Messenger (peace be upon him) of the blessings of an expanded heart, a lifted burden, elevated mention, and the promise of ease alongside hardship, Allah gives a command: “So once you have fulfilled your duty, strive in devotion.”
The verse teaches a profound lesson about the rhythm of faith. Relief is not meant to lead to heedlessness. Relief creates space for renewed devotion.
The scholars explained that the verse carries a broad meaning. When one responsibility is completed, a believer should turn their attention toward another act of obedience, worship, service, or remembrance.
The life of a believer is not defined by constant inactivity or constant exhaustion. Rather, it is marked by purposeful movement between different forms of obedience to Allah. One act leads to another. One opportunity for worship opens the door to the next.
This verse also helps us understand the purpose of ease. People often think of relief as the finish line. They imagine that once a hardship ends, they can finally stop striving. The Quran presents a different perspective. Ease is not merely a reward. It is also a trust. When Allah grants time, energy, clarity, or relief, He is creating an opportunity to draw closer to Him.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) embodied this principle throughout his life. When one responsibility was completed, he turned to another. When one opportunity for worship ended, he continued remembering Allah, teaching others, serving people, and guiding his community. His life was not defined by moments of inspiration alone. It was defined by consistency.
This verse, therefore, teaches believers not to waste the openings Allah provides. When a burden is lifted, ask: How can I use this relief to draw closer to Allah?
When time becomes available, ask: What act of worship can fill it?
When a difficulty ends, ask: How can I thank Allah through action?
The believer understands that every blessing carries a responsibility and every moment of ease is an opportunity to continue the journey toward Allah.
Takeaway:
The goal of relief is not spiritual complacency. When Allah grants ease, He creates new opportunities for worship, gratitude, and nearness to Him.
Hadith
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“The most beloved deeds to Allah are those that are done consistently, even if they are small.”
(Sahih al-Bukhari 6465; Sahih Muslim 783)
Practical Activity
After completing one act of worship today, intentionally follow it with another small act.
For example:
After prayer, spend a minute making dhikr.
After reading the Quran, make a short dua.
After helping someone, thank Allah for the opportunity.
Practice moving from one act of goodness to another.
How it helps:
Builds consistency in worship.
Prevents spiritual stagnation.
Trains the heart to see every blessing as an opportunity for obedience.
Dua
يَا مُقَلِّبَ الْقُلُوبِ ثَبِّتْ قَلْبِي عَلَى دِينِكَ
Yā Muqallibal-qulūb, thabbit qalbī ʿalā dīnik.
O Turner of hearts, keep my heart firm upon Your religion.
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2140)
Reflection Question
When Allah grants you relief from a difficulty, how can you transform that new space in your life into a means of drawing closer to Him rather than drifting away from Him?
