Surah Ash-Sharh: The Expansion of the Heart
Day 6: The One Goal
Theme: Directing every effort toward Allah
Quran Verse
Lesson & Reflection
Surah Ash-Sharh concludes with a single instruction that gathers the entire chapter into one point of focus: “And to your Lord direct your longing.”
After expanding the chest, lifting the burden, raising the mention of His Messenger (peace be upon him), promising ease alongside hardship, and commanding continued striving, Allah now reveals the direction toward which all of that effort should lead. Him.
The word farghab comes from raghbah, which refers to deep desire, hope, longing, and aspiration. The verse teaches that while a believer may pursue many responsibilities and goals in life, the heart's ultimate longing should remain directed toward Allah.
The scholars explain that this means turning one's hopes, needs, desires, and dependence toward Him alone. This does not mean abandoning worldly responsibilities. The Prophet (peace be upon him) worked, taught, worshipped, served his community, and cared for his family. Yet through all of those activities, his heart remained attached to Allah.
This verse, therefore, teaches one of the most important principles of spiritual life: The problem is not that people strive. The question is what they are striving for. Many people spend their lives chasing approval, status, comfort, recognition, wealth, or security. Even when those goals are achieved, the heart often remains restless because it was created for something greater.
Allah concludes the surah by reminding us that every blessing and every hardship should ultimately draw us back to Him. The expanded heart was given to help us know Him. The burden was lifted to help us serve Him. The ease was granted to help us continue striving toward Him. The striving itself was meant to bring us nearer to Him.
When Allah becomes the ultimate goal, other goals find their proper place. Permissible work becomes worship when done sincerely for Allah. Caring for one's family becomes worship when done seeking Allah's pleasure. Service becomes worship when offered sincerely and in accordance with what Allah loves. Family becomes worship when cared for sincerely. Service becomes worship when offered sincerely. The believer's life becomes unified because all roads lead back to Allah.
This is the final lesson of the surah. Relief is not the destination. Success is not the destination. Even striving is not the destination. Allah is.
Takeaway:
The heart finds lasting peace when its greatest hope, desire, and purpose are directed toward Allah. Every blessing and every effort reaches its true meaning when it leads back to Him.
Hadith
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“Be mindful of Allah, and He will protect you. Be mindful of Allah, and you will find His help and support before you. Remember Allah in times of ease, and He will care for you in times of hardship”
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi 2516)
Practical Activity
Before beginning an important task today, pause briefly and renew your intention. Ask yourself: “How can this bring me closer to Allah?”
Then proceed with that intention consciously in your heart.
How it helps:
Purifies intentions.
Turns ordinary actions into worship.
Keeps the heart focused on Allah rather than outcomes alone.
Dua
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ حُبَّكَ وَحُبَّ مَنْ يُحِبُّكَ وَالْعَمَلَ الَّذِي يُبَلِّغُنِي حُبَّكَ
Allāhumma innī as'aluka ḥubbaka wa ḥubba man yuḥibbuka wal-ʿamala alladhī yuballighunī ḥubbak.
O Allah, I ask You for Your love, the love of those who love You, and the deeds that will bring me closer to Your love.
(Jami' al-Tirmidhi 3490)
Reflection Question
If someone examined the direction of your daily efforts, ambitions, and concerns, would they see a life primarily aimed at worldly success, or a life ultimately directed toward Allah?
