Surah Ash-Sharh: The Expansion of the Heart
Day 4: The Promise of Ease
Theme: Allah places ease alongside hardship
Quran Verses
Lesson & Reflection
These two verses are among the most comforting promises in the entire Quran. Allah repeats the same message twice: “So, surely with hardship comes ease. Surely with that hardship comes more ease.”
The repetition itself is a mercy. It reassures the believer that this is not a distant possibility or a hopeful suggestion. It is a promise from Allah. One of the most beautiful aspects of these verses is the word ma'a: “with.”
Allah does not say that ease comes after hardship. He says that ease comes with hardship. This means that whenever Allah sends a difficulty, He also creates forms of ease alongside it, even if we do not immediately recognize them.
The scholars pointed to a beautiful observation in the wording. The hardship (al-'usr) appears with the definite article, referring to a specific hardship, while the ease (yusr) appears without it. This led many scholars to note that one hardship is accompanied by multiple forms of ease.
Whether or not a person can see those forms of ease immediately, Allah's promise remains true. Sometimes the ease appears as patience. Sometimes as strength. Sometimes as guidance. Sometimes as the support of others. Sometimes sins being forgiven. Sometimes growth that only becomes visible later. The hardship is real. The ease is also real.
The Prophet (peace be upon him) lived through periods of immense difficulty. He experienced rejection, loss, hardship, and opposition. Yet throughout those trials, Allah continually granted support, guidance, strength, and openings.
These verses remind believers not to judge their situation too quickly.
Pain often narrows our perspective. We become focused on what hurts and struggle to notice what Allah is already providing alongside it. The promise of these verses invites us to look again. To trust again. To remember again. Not because hardship is easy, but because Allah's promise is true.
The believer, therefore, learns to hold two realities together: The hardship is real. And Allah's ease is real. Both exist at the same time.
Some scholars offer the parable of hardship as a lone bird in flight, immediately followed by a flock of birds symbolizing ease. They remain forever intertwined, with ease trailing hardship wherever it goes.
Takeaway:
Allah did not promise a life without hardship. He promised that no hardship comes without ease accompanying it.
Hadith
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
“...Know that there is much good in being patient with what you dislike. Victory comes with patience, relief comes with hardship, and with hardship comes ease.”
(40 Hadith an-Nawawi, 19)
Practical Activity
When you encounter something difficult today, pause and ask yourself: “What forms of ease has Allah already placed alongside this hardship?”
Write down or mentally note at least one blessing, strength, opportunity, or source of support that remains present despite the difficulty.
How it helps:
Shifts attention from despair to gratitude.
Strengthens trust in Allah's promise.
Helps train the heart to recognize hidden blessings.
Dua
اللَّهُمَّ لَا سَهْلَ إِلَّا مَا جَعَلْتَهُ سَهْلًا وَأَنْتَ تَجْعَلُ الْحَزْنَ إِذَا شِئْتَ سَهْلًا
Allāhumma lā sahla illā mā jaʿaltahu sahlā wa anta tajʿalul-ḥazna idhā shi'ta sahlā.
O Allah, there is no ease except what You make easy, and if You will, You can make sorrow easy.
(Hisn al-Muslim 139)
