The Authority and Importance of the Sunnah
Day 1: Two Sources, One Guidance
Islam Is Built on Revelation, Not Opinion
Islam is not a religion shaped by culture, preference, or personal reasoning. It is built upon revelation (wahy, divine communication from Allah). Allah did not leave human beings to discover guidance on their own. Instead, He revealed the Quran and sent a Messenger ﷺ to explain, live, and apply it. From the very beginning, Muslims understood that guidance comes from what Allah revealed and what His Messenger ﷺ taught.
The Quran itself repeatedly establishes that the Prophet ﷺ is not merely a conveyor of verses, but a teacher, guide, and authority. Allah says:
“And We revealed to you the Reminder (the Quran) so that you may explain clearly to the people what was sent down to them”

This verse alone shows that explanation is part of the Prophet’s mission. Without that explanation, the Quran would be incomplete in practice.
The Sunnah Is Not Separate from the Quran
The Sunnah (the teachings, actions, and approvals of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) is not a later addition to Islam, nor a human attempt to interpret the Quran. Shaykh Jamal ad-Din Zarabozo emphasizes that the Sunnah is inseparably linked to the Quran. The Quran gives principles, commands, and guidance. The Sunnah shows how those commands are lived.
For example, the Quran commands prayer, charity, fasting, and pilgrimage, but it does not give detailed instructions for how to perform them. The Prophet ﷺ demonstrated these acts through his words and actions. He said:
“Pray as you have seen me pray.”

Without the Sunnah, core acts of worship would remain vague concepts rather than living practices.
Obedience to the Prophet ﷺ Is a Quranic Command
One of the strongest proofs of the Sunnah’s authority is that Allah explicitly commands obedience to the Messenger ﷺ. Allah says:
“Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed Allah.”
https://quran.com/4/80
This verse leaves no room to separate obedience to Allah from obedience to the Prophet ﷺ. To claim that one follows the Quran while ignoring the Sunnah is to contradict the Quran itself.
The companions of the Prophet ﷺ understood this clearly. They did not ask whether something was found in the Quran alone. If the Prophet ﷺ commanded or taught something authentically, that was enough. Their understanding of Islam was holistic, grounded in both revelation and prophetic guidance.
A Foundation for the Journey Ahead
Day 1 sets the foundation for this entire Learning Plan. Before discussing doubts, misconceptions, or modern challenges, we must be clear about where authority in Islam comes from. Islam is not Quran-only, nor is it dependent on later scholars inventing meanings. It is Quran and Sunnah together, preserved, practiced, and transmitted as a unified way of life.
When this foundation is strong, many modern confusions begin to dissolve. The Sunnah does not compete with the Quran. It completes it.
Personal Reflection Question
When you think about how you practice Islam today, how central is the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ as a guide in your understanding and daily actions?
